Not sure how that fits in with your thinking?
Actually no surprisingly - it's nothing like the density of water. I think a double shot is about 60ml's whereas it would weigh maybe 36g - so quite aerated and nowhere near as dense. This is one of the reasons there is so many confusing discussions on this subject.

This is actually why I stick to weight - because things like Crema etc can vary and hence the volume is more variable as well.

You should get the idea from that though and of course that's just a rule of thumb. Ristretto and lungo shots are less and more output respectively.

IMS also makes a couple of single baskets. They are available from some of the sponsors.

La Marzocco baskets are VST baskets, but only come in ridged. The 7g only ever comes in ridged because the bit the coffee goes in is narrower than the upper 58mm section, so there's no point making the ridged and ridgless. I'm pretty sure the LM AU website has them in stock, and relatively cheap too. You also need a specific tamper for them (41mm).

The 7 g baskets seem pretty thin on the ground. Checked Coffee Parts online catalogue. Apart from VST the only other one they stock is a Decent one. The Pesado ones only go down to 17 g

Interesting. Had no real idea what most people use other than in cafes I gather the better ones give you a double shot if you order a mug a latte. We control our caffeine by drinking decaf in the evening.

Huh? How common is it people actually use the single basket? I thought they were too difficult to get a good extraction from so even if you wanted a single shot, use a double 18g and throw half out.

Can always make the tamper smaller.

I use a 18g vst. Make a double for everyone that wants one. I guess I could split a shot if a visitor didn't like it that strong. Just bang the basket in the double portafilter.

This is something I'm interested in. I've got a Rocket Mozzafiato Cronometro Evoluzione R and have a 58.5mm tamp. I only got it recently and the stock basket is a double or a triple. I also often drink milk coffees and my wife wants limited caffeine - so I'm tempted to get the VST set. My one concern is that my tamp might not work... given the VST recommends 58.4mm...

At the moment I use the double loaded to 22g for my ristretto or espresso, then I underload it a bit for my wife (but I get a poor quality extraction).

Would the VST work with a 58.5mm tamp?

I work off 10g being one shot and ask people if they want a single or a double. I know how much caffeine I can handle in a day, so I find it easier to work off the dry weight of the coffee. Whether I'm having espresso, filter or cold brew I can rough it out in my head how much I've had and can decide how I want to spend the rest of the day's budget.

Using the Italian standard for baskets, a 7g is a single, 14g is a double, 21 is a triple and 28 (Yep, I have one) is a quad.

Given todays better baskets (I use VSTs) & grinders, a few non-smoking guys like me have moved from a 20 (1987-ish) slowly down to 7 (2016-ish). I still have one visiting friend who get a VST22g here. A few others get one of my VST15gs. These days I rarely use my 18 or 20.

Worth a mention - most coffee pods (shudder) go from 5.5g upwards to circa 8g, so enough flavour is available in smaller sizes.

YMMV as it obviously depends upon your preference in terms of flavour whack.

Basket size discussion (grams not basket diameter)

This is probably an obvious question but have not found much on it.

Assuming we are talking about E61 portafilters which are all around 58mm, they come in different sizes ranging from about 22 gms down to 7 gms.

I realize the larger ones are usually used in double shot portafilters, coffees come in different size mugs and cups and some people like a stronger cup than others.

My wife and I normally drink milk coffees and I make the two cups from a 22gm Pesado but if I also have a single visitor I use what I think is a 14gm basket for the third coffee unless they request a double ristretto etc. I also realize a lot of this comes down to personal preference.

However I would appreciate if the more knowledgeable members could advise what size baskets they would use in various situations (eg catering for various visitors wanting different sorts of coffees)?
