Rodney Yes I do something similar to what Mike describes. I also invested in a cheap distributor tool. I got mine on aliexpress but it took a while to get here. Been fiddling with the depth adjustment to the point I can now do the tamping with it Yes the indented ring around the edge is an artifact of the dosing cup but think the distribution/ tamping takes care of it.

Yeah, I do get what you mean Ted. I do something similar but the coffee seems to make a small mound in the centre of the basket while the edge of the dosing cup leaves a indented ring around the edge. A bit of shaking and smoothing can level it off, but wondering if this isn't quite giving the best result. Mike, I have been thinking of getting a distributor, so maybe that's the next bit of kit!

I found the same thing. Have just got myself a cheap Dailyart Coffee Distributor tool off amazon so now flip the cup onto the basket, push the grounds across a bit with a finger, then spin the tool on it & getting perfect dose, perfect distribution, and through a bottomless portafilter am watch & getting best shots ive ever had

Rodney from what I have seen and tried myself that after you rotate the cup on the PF (ie while the cup is on the top) a good shake seems to help with the distribution before you remove the cup. Hope i have explained this right.

I had the exact same problems as Mike, but got the rhinowares cup in July. It has definitely taken one problematic variable out of the process and transferring from the cup to the filter basket is a snap. I will say that after transferring, the distribution of the ground coffee doesn't seem great, but that could just be my technique.

The rubber mounting block is from Clark Rubber. They even punched the hole in it for me to provide a tight push in fit so I can remove the spout for cleaning.

I found the 32mm Stainless elbow on ebay a couple of years ago. This looks like the same item:

Thanks for the replies. I will line up one of those SS cups. The dosing cups certainly make it easier to weigh. I took to weighing the beans in the cup before grinding and then after the grind and found I was getting similar results. That is after tapping the outside of the funnel to make sure all the grinds ended in the cup.

Ev. that is a cool set up. I like the shelf for the scales. Where did you get that spout on your Mazzer Mini?

Bought an Artisan Dosing Cup a few years ago and have been very happy with it; prefer to use it rather than a funnel.
Very similar to the one here at CoffeeParts...

The Niche Zero comes with a nice dosing cup which fits a 58mm portafilter perfectly. Now that I am used to that workflow on the Niche ZeroI have started to use it on other grinders like the one we use at work eg grinding into a dosing tin. I also weigh the tin and tare my scales before grinding to have a consistent dose.

    Here is one from a sponsor;

Good thing about the tin is you have plenty of room and can shake to level the grinds and stir if you like.

I found the Decor cups very messy (too small & too much static). I have a Tiamo Stainless Steel Dosing cup on order & in the meantime, using a home made stainless cup with similar dimensions. Works great with my modified doserless Mazzer Mini.

Ive recently discovered using one & its helpmed me enourmously. My shots were varying from shot to shot too much & was chasing the grind all over the pace on the mazzer mini - get it dialed in & suddenly get a gusher or a choker. Id always weighed beans going into the hopper. Started weighing what comes out instead & my 19 g carefully weighed in, can vary between 16.5 gm to 22 - depending on how much gets hung up on the mesh screen & doenst fall. So now i grind into a dosing cup which ive written the weight on, and grind to an exact Output of 19g, then flip into the portafilter, spread & tamp. Has made my shots much more consistent & taken out a big variable i didnt realise was there.

started a topic Dosing Cups - Do you use them?

Dosing Cups - Do you use them?

I recently converted a Rossi RR45 grinder to single dosing using an 'octopus' batter funnel and was trying to work out the best way to load the PF. I came across a U Tube video of a guy demonstrating a Malkonig EK43 grinder set up from dosing & extraction to achieve perfect extraction results. He was using Decor 75 ml tubs. Looked brilliant so I ordered a set of 6 online for $5 which came in two colours which was great - one for caf and one for decaf.

I copied his technique which was to put the PF on top of the tub - it is almost a perfect fit.
Then invert and shake a bit and then remove the tub.
    Finally I use a distributor / tamper

The only issue I found was while using the grinding that the grinds tend to fall down one side of the funnel and overfill the cup on that side. Rotating the cup a bit during the grind seems to fix that.

Am wondering having found the cup working well with the 'octopus' funnel would there be any further benefit in trying one of those SS dosing cups. Reducing clumping / static etc.

Anyway did a search on CS and found little discussion of dosing cups so am curious if members think them a waste of time or not.

Working...
