It sounds like an Over Pressure Valve being activated. Is water coming out of yours when the whine is heard?

Java "Have you found a good cheese to go with that whine?" phile

Thanks for the advice, Ted2013. I replaced the pump with the equivalent Ulka and she's back to life. BUT pressure was shooting up to 12-13 bar and the machine was machine a high pitched whine when passing 9-10 bar.

I adjusted the OPV and brought it down to around 9.5 bar, but I am still hearing the noise.

Anyone have thoughts as to the shrieking whine as it hits higher pressure?

Quite likely that the ULKA pump has failed. Has happened to my BFC machine twice in 10 years. However both times it gave some warning. Struggled for a while to get up to pressure before finally failing. The good news is that they are not that expensive to buy (eg Coffee Parts) nor that difficult to replace if you are handy.

    Pump kaput?

    G'day all,

I recently picked up a beautiful used E61 HX machine (Giove) that worked well for the past week before today when steam poured out of the group and no water followed.

    Symptoms are:
    • No water out of the group, steam or hot water arms
    • Pump engages and appears to run continuously
    • No pressure is registering on the gauge
I pulled the covers off and I see no leaks, but a pump that was made in 2011 (Ulka vibratory). Otherwise, the machine was serviced by a reputable company in July and looks spotless inside and out.

Is it likely the pump has failed and is not filling the boiler?

    Any advice is welcomed!
