I always start with the recipe given by the roaster, then tweak from there. Remember that recipes are often given with commercial machines in mind, which with a rotary pump will be at 9bar in a split second, whereas a home machine with a vibration pump will take seconds to ramp up to 9 bar, additional preinfusion measures will add more time.

The recipe seems well within parameters, to be honest. A lot of beans do well with less than 2:1, and also in the under 30s category.

Although, unless your machine’s grouphead is particularly suited to overdosing of that much you may want to dial back the ratio closer to what will comfortably work in your basket without inducing channeling. Or you could grab a 24/25g vst basket (if you have a bottomless portafilter) for extra funsies! But keeping the same ratio with a lower dose should be a good starting point.

Also, you know, 1kg gives you plenty of time for experimentation! Enjoy ?

Go with what you are used to and adjust grind and dose from there.

24g sounds like you would be flirting on the side of a triple shot!
From memory a 'standard' single shot is 7-9g, double (most common) is 14-19g and a triple in the range of 21-28g. These are just ballpark as there isn't a universal standard.

Yield seems okay for such a large dose, but on the smaller side for 24g. Remember a 2:1 is a good base so double out when you dose.
Extraction time - again varies on machines but 30 seconds is a good benchmark.

I'd stick mostly with what you know and tinker from there. The dose will be different depending on your setup and what you like compared to what the roaster is using. Also they have an incentive for larger doses > more coffee per shot > more sales!

    Coffee Dosing 24g

    Greetings,

I just picked up a Kg of beans from a local roaster just down the road, but he recommended the following:
    • 24g in (dose)
    • 35-45g out (yield)
    • 25-30 seconds (extraction time)
    Using a 21g basket

Does this seem a little odd? I do have a 19-22g VST basket, but still the recommendation is very different to what I'm used to.

    Thoughts?
