  • Gaggia classic / single boiler flow control trick

    Hello All,

I saw this video from whole latte love about a trick to have some kind of flow control/pre infusion over pulling the shot. Basically after starting the shot you then open up the steam wand to divert some of the water from the boiler, then close it off when you want full pressure through the puck.

Im looking forward to giving it a go on my Lelit Victoria, a basic test just running water through seemed to show that it will work. Will be interested to see what people think of this technique and how I works on different machines.

That’s the first good video I’ve seen from WLL. I’ve been steering people away from their YouTube vids for years as they’ve usually contained at best useless info and at worst plain bad advice. This on the other hand is worth a try. It’s been discussed on Gaggia forums and threads for years as a pseudo pre-infusion option so isn’t really a new thing. Without a gauge mod you’re flying blind, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a go. The good thing about the Gaggia Classic is that it’s the sort of machine that you can really get a ‘feel’ for and this is just another tool in the belt for getting the best out of it.

Here's a video showing this morning's espresso pull using the steam wand for flow control. It allows me a much greater amount of control over the pressure for pre infusion than I thought it would!

apologies for the shaky video, hard to film and control the machine at the same time (especially before my morning coffee )
