If they're both spouted, I can only think it would be that they're having a different effect on the crema between where it leaves the basket and where it leaves the spouts.
Try making a shot in the same basket on both portafilters, and leave them for 10+ minutes until the crema dissipates. Then stir them and see if you can tell the difference.

Difference in head space, between the two pfs, above the puck, when in situ in the grouphead, possibly? Good Luck.

Kafine... What machine ?
How are you tasting these? Straight Espresso, Blacks, Whites?
Short of that...I think more what your noticing is the variance in the beverage ratio's!
i.e. dose gm / shot yield (gm) / *dilution % (gm)
* assumption here

Heavier Portafilter better brew temp?
For a while now i have been using a Cafelat XL portafilter handle with a 15gm vst basket and thought i had it dialed in well. To add some bling and get a bigger basket i purchased a Pesado handle and 24.5 basket. What i found was a dramatic difference in taste in my espresso for the better and was wondering if the extra bulk of the Pesado, over 100 gms is making a difference to the stability of the brew water temp. Everything seems better. The comparison is spouted and when swapping baskets ie. VST in pesado and 18gm Pesado basket in the XL handle the coffee out of the XL is not as full flavoured and blondes earlier. Anyone have any other ideas as i prefer the shots out of the bigger basket regardless of handle but more so from the heavier pesado handle.
