I've replaced the seals, but there's still some sweating or condensation in the baskets as the machine idles with the portafilters in place.

I can't recall whether they used to be wet or dry years ago. What's others experience with the E61 groups with solenoid valves?

Yes, I keep a couple of boxes of assorted generic o-rings. Some tiny ones end up in the vacuum break valve. The other day a couple went into the three-way valve. Some once went into to the gearbox of my boat.

Hmmmm now Robusta I didn't tell you this ...so we'll need to lower the Dome of Silence ok

As long as you carefully measure / line up the key dimensions....
Cross Section, Diameter A N D proper material i.e. heat resistant etc.
You'd be surprised where you can source alternative supplies !
Often even the manufacturer will source these from common outside supply lines.
And then Bingo they then become...
Manufacturer XYZ123, Model-78/GD, OEM Part No. ZXC4578 seal!

Anyway I think its safe we can now lift the Dome of Silence. GL

Incidentally, I/we call the group part a mushroom. But the other day when I went to a very large showroom and repair place in outer-Melbourne, both the salesman and technician looked at me blankly when I said I wanted a mushroom o-ring. I showed them an internet picture of one before, and only then did they know what I was talking about.

So far , in onlne parts suppliers I've seen them referred to as mushroom, drain sleeve, injector jet, upper sleeve, injector sleeve.

Haha Adventurer, profile=o-ring shape, not coffee.

Trying to save on postage by ordering all 3 at once, otherwise will be $24 to $36 for that alone. Ridiculous.

Robusta you refer to profile in th e first line......shot profile??

But my answer to your Q...is to much thought for the cost of it.....
    Replace them!
Wait on...2grp So replace one side and compare!
    Then replace the other regardless.

This will help you profile ! the maintenance regime required in future.

Oh and my take on the moisture in the basket at idle is normal condensation occuring as the surrounding region (obv) is moist n hot.
And no water would be passing out from the cam chamber as the exhaust valve is held closed on spring pressure. Unless there is scale build up or the valve seals there are past there best.

Report back your findings for reference

    Mushroom O-ring Leaking?

I'm not sure whether the o-rings on my Grimacs need replacing. Some are probably at least 15 years old and the profile is more flat than curved.

if they aren't sealing, some brew water could be pumping straight down past them into the cam chamber and out the shower screen...instead of up and through the restrictor on top of the mushroom.

What, if any, are the tell-tale symptoms of a necessary replacement?

I suspected perhaps wet baskets (empty ones during idle). But is that from water already residing in the channels back from the shower screen? Or from water dripping down past the mushroom seal, into the cam chamber, evaporating and condensing into the basket?

Dunno. But probably time for new ones.

Working...
