very strange, i use a 20g vst basket and 20g in it is spot on. I have also used 21 and 22g but find 20 to 20.3 grams the sweet spot for it. I'll take a pic of what 20g of ground coffee looks like in mine before tamping tomorrow. Mine is just about full

Seems very strange as I used to own a bdb and had the vst 20g baskets. I dosed 20.4g and never had issues with my shots when pulling them. I would just overdose and see how you go

As L3N says there's much going on.
Use the search function here, do some reading. Most everything has been asked /answered prev.
    Try some different settings.
Taste them...even if the shot hasn't run as you expected. Assists the learning process.

First up you'll need dose extra. try 21g then 21.5g. Then see if 20.5 is enough to stop tamper fouling sides of basket.

Also note how long til first drops appear in the cup / what time to reach 10g out if you have a scale set up.
That will help you at least control the early part of the shot.
GL. report back your findings and any questions.

PS dont stress over wet pucks...italian espresso rule...inmho.

There's a few factors at play. One as you mentioned was other machines with lower shower screens. The BDB has a really high shower screen compared to more traditional and commercial machines. There's also the grind size that causes the same amount of coffee to fill the basket different amounts, and bean density (darker roasts take up more room at the same grind size), as well as the way that certain beans break down when ground (coffee is friable, it is less like crushing rock and more like breaking fibro sheets down, but the cellular structure in different species can vary quite a bit). All this to say, you may find a different dose works better than what is on the packaging. I find VST baskets work best when slightly overdosed, I do 18.4g in an 18g basket. I used to do 20g in the 18g basket and the pucks were much cleaner. (I also have a BDB)

I have a Breville dual boiler which I've been using with the stock basket, I was using a Breville grinder which by all accounts was not great, but all the same I had been producing pretty good cups of coffee which I quite enjoy. Recently I upgraded my grinder to a DF64, which on paper is a significantly better grinder, and I love it for for a lot of reasons but I'm having a time trying to get dialed in with it. I thought I'd grab some better baskets, and, well, its weird. I just got a 20g basket since I've been brewing with the same 2:1 ratio I've been using since day dot, 20g beans -> 40g espresso (or as close as I can get it), figuring that getting a basket that's actually designed for the 20g of coffee I always use would be ideal.

What I am finding is that my 20g of ground coffee barely half fills it. I have a 58mm tamper, and I can barely reach the compressed bed of coffee with it before the tamper fouls against the tapered walls of the basket, so for one I don't think its being properly tamped with 20g in there. Its leaving a huge headspace, and when I knock the puck out its really muddy and squishy.

I'm trying to get the new gear dialed in with as little wastage as possible, and I usually try to avoid drinking my mistakes (life's too short for bad coffee). The only thing I can think of to do is just pack more than 20g into the 20g basket. It seems "wrong" to do that though.

Just wondering if anyone's had any similar experiences with VST baskets? Far be it from me to suggest, but are the weight ratings just wrong? Or are they perhaps designed for a different machine where the shower head (dunno what you call that bit) protrudes further so the coffee bed sits closer to it?
Working...
