I have a Breville dual boiler which I've been using with the stock basket, I was using a Breville grinder which by all accounts was not great, but all the same I had been producing pretty good cups of coffee which I quite enjoy. Recently I upgraded my grinder to a DF64, which on paper is a significantly better grinder, and I love it for for a lot of reasons but I'm having a time trying to get dialed in with it. I thought I'd grab some better baskets, and, well, its weird. I just got a 20g basket since I've been brewing with the same 2:1 ratio I've been using since day dot, 20g beans -> 40g espresso (or as close as I can get it), figuring that getting a basket that's actually designed for the 20g of coffee I always use would be ideal.
What I am finding is that my 20g of ground coffee barely half fills it. I have a 58mm tamper, and I can barely reach the compressed bed of coffee with it before the tamper fouls against the tapered walls of the basket, so for one I don't think its being properly tamped with 20g in there. Its leaving a huge headspace, and when I knock the puck out its really muddy and squishy.
I'm trying to get the new gear dialed in with as little wastage as possible, and I usually try to avoid drinking my mistakes (life's too short for bad coffee). The only thing I can think of to do is just pack more than 20g into the 20g basket. It seems "wrong" to do that though.
Just wondering if anyone's had any similar experiences with VST baskets? Far be it from me to suggest, but are the weight ratings just wrong? Or are they perhaps designed for a different machine where the shower head (dunno what you call that bit) protrudes further so the coffee bed sits closer to it?
