How do you do single shots

The 12gm in the single ECM basket clears the screen by more than a 5c piece (stock screen gasket with IMS screen on Synchronica).... I've not added more coffee etc to determine how much space is there.... as I only normally go full analytical if I'm having an issue.

Yes Spot on Noel. And your wife knows what she wants and thats the benefit of having a home setup. Why drink something not quite to your liking.
And at home you can vary your finished drinks in many ways as I do... similar but not the same.
Ive posted many times before on the single basket when it comes up as it does at times.
Ive most always objected to the same same stow 'em / throw 'em attitude, common here.
If you want Greg look up my multiple posts prev and variables stated.
With espresso your palate can develop as you time proceeds, so keep an eye out Noel she may one day want the 15ml basket Or you can try down dosing the IMS between that and the 12g in the single.
Dose / duration of shot / flow rate / shot yield / extraction level / additions post shot (water milks etc.) all contribute to what is finally being tasted in the cup.
Many baskets, many cup sizes, variation of the finished beverage all give a varying results that have different flavours, tastes, and even after tastes. Which Equals more satisfaction for the drinker.
And not everyone wants a USA size bucket at breakfast (or beyond) loaded with sugar syrups!
Or an Italian style espresso extraction of 30mls.
Just asking Noel ...that 12g dose is still clear of the showerscreen....when locked in.....right ?
As you know and what others - Greg you tuning in - havent tried is, there is a fine line with a single basket but once mastered the benefits are gold.
And if you can master a single ...well everything else falls into line IME quicker, easier and opens up all the further variables from there when using other baskets no matter what size. YMMV.
GL with it Greg post back your results.
Hey Javaphile get your pen out and place a tick on Noels post as the question has been answered !
Again. And yes I know JP, you are not a convertie either....

All depends on personal preference of what 'too strong' really is.
Personally I do the split a double in two singles when I want to have more coffees than my daily limit of doubles.
There isn't really any correct answers on this topic but a lot people find a single shot basket too fiddly to be useful.

Likely make it too strong. Still got the same amount of coffee 'stuff' just in a shorter shot (not quite but nearly)

3 times a day I make a coffee with a 20 or 15gm basket (IMS) and also a 7gr basket (ECM). Currently using a Synchronica. Did the same thing for 25 years with a Pavoni Profesional with the 2 standard baskets. I use the same process for both baskets, same tamper etc..... but grind finer for the IMS basket. In the ECM 7gr basket I dose 12gms in it for the wifes coffee.... she preffers it over me using a 15gm IMS basket.... go figure. FWI..... with the pavoni it was quite a different pull technique (and grind) to get it to work....also... different coffee for both of us.... roasted by me from Andy's offers....
The wife does use almond milk though (home made every 2nd day) .... also.... her shots are mostly 1:1..... all taste driven by her......very stressful making her a coffee!
For the most part.... she only wants a 130ml or so drink (15ml coffee and 115ml almond milk).... so.... this drives the use of the single.... along with us not sharing either the coffee type or milk type.Last edited by Noelpolar; 9 September 2022, 10:15 AM.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Seems everyone does not pull singles, but I'm surprised no one pulls a Ristretto Shot using a double shot basket when a single is required. Or, would that make the shot too strong.

I use my double spout and split a double. Single baskets are just so difficult to use as previously noted by many.

I do singles really well. I take the single basket and throw it in the recycling bin. Sorted!

I've given up trying to pull singles and just drink doubles instead.
That said I use an EP basket that takes 14-18gm.
Got to wonder why do they even include single baskets with machines?

I decided a long time ago to just stick to using the double basket. Normally, I do larger cups/mugs so the vast majority of what I makes needs a double anyway.
If I am using the ACF tulip cups, I just make them in sets of 2. If there is a requirement for an odd number of cups, I will pull the spare into a demitasse and make myself an extra macchiato.
In summary, it's easier to stick with the one type of basket - make drinks that need double shots!

How do you do single shots
Hi all,
What is the general opinion regarding single shots. Do you use a double basket as if you were doing a double shot and stop it short? Or do you use single shot basket for a single shot and a double basket for a double shot? Or, do you pull a double shot and waste one shot?
My idea would be to always use a double shot basket as it makes life easier with setup. One grind setting, dose, dose quantity etc. rather then two separte settings for each basket.
Thoughts appreciated.
TIA
