  • WDT...what style/type is best?

Been looking at the WDT (coffee stirrer thingies) and see a few differing styles.
Is there a good, bad, ugly style that's considered 'better'?
Type 1 has either rounded or wavy ends to the wires.
Type 2 has just straight wires.

Type 1 not good - ends too big.
Type 2 good assuming diameter less than 0. 4 mm on needles but I prefer the JKim one where the needles flare out a bit after trying one with straight needles.

I went with option 2, using 3d printed base and 3d-printer cleaning needles from Amazon. Only issue I can see is that they're a little sharp on the bottom, so I ran them over some sandpaper, and try to keep them off the bottom of the portafilter

Agree that the second one is better.

Worth noting that the needles are actually acupuncture needles and that's why they are sharp. You can order the acupuncture needles on their own and make up your own handle which ends up cheaper than buying something already made. Then can file the ends down to make them a bit more blunt.

As for diameter I read or saw a review somewhere on different sizes and the conclusion was that 0.2 was too flimsy, 0.4 too thick and pushed the coffee around, and 0.3 just right!

You can cut the pointy ends of the accupuncture needs off with flush cutters. I second the Jkim one as the best. There's one off AliExpress that's 90% as good too.

              Acupuncture needles?
Like these guys? I guess the 0.30 x 75 size are the ones wanted? I'm also guessing the price is for the box of 100 needles (that means I'll have about 90 needles too many!).

I used an old nickle string off a resonator guitar.
I bought a set of very fine drill bits from Jaycar and sanded down a bit of broom handle.

Option 2 made a huge difference for me. No more channeling and way more consistent!

A big user study by decent users found 0.4 needles or smaller the best as they de lump without moving the coffee around the basket too much.

Has anyone solved WDT when using a paper filter below the puck? I'm thinking the manual versions would be difficult to use without snagging the paper; maybe one of the versions that sit on the basket lip might work (gotta rewatch the Hoffman vid - I think there's at least one with adjustable depth)
They seem horribly over-engineered, though, compared to the elegant simplicity of a cork and a few acupuncture needles, and 55mm PF is always a complicating factor.

Just facing the same challenge snagging paper filters with the rake. It's actually worse with the BIT Bob basket because it's concave and the paper stops the coffee dropping into the bottom of basket. Will probably abandon the idea I suspect.

That's the size John Buckman recommends. I started with that but I now prefer using 0.25 but more of them.

                      Smart looking stand Tom

Thanks 338 that setup is from sworks design and the rake is magnetic. The stand is an optional extra so if you have a surface that works with a magnet you can place it there. But this is probably not where I would leave it. Demo purposes only!

That's what I did, with another magnet placed in the underside of a shelf.
Actually a few different places but they are only 3-4mm magnets.

I need something like that. Current WDT has a wood handle and cone shaped so cant stand upright.
Maybe I can drill and glue a magnet into the handle, it's a pain to store otherwise!

These things are really not needed, and distribution tools too.

Good to hear you have had improved channeling. It is easy to get a good extraction without adding in steps though

This has been shown over and over to improve extraction. It’s not just putting a flat top on your puck like an OCD.

It has been shown to work so that:
                        - most of the WBC contestants used needle WDT.
                        - most high end grinders are shipping with a WDT tool, including Weber and Lagom.
