• <groan> descriptions on second-hand equipment

If youre like me and keep an eye out for second-hand equipment, you sometimes have to laugh/cry/groan at comments that betray the sellers pitiful ignorance. Heres one I saw recently on a single group HX machine (the type that has a steam wand on one side and a hot water outlet on the other...)

"needs a bit of maintenance, one frothier does not work as good as the other. I am selling due to getting an upgrade" : I bet hell be disappointed when he finds his new machine has the same fault as his old one! ;D

Seen any shockers?

Saw that last night but couldnt be bothered wasting my typing fingers to tell the wally what his problem was : Funny thing their upgrade will definately have the same problem Maybe to much milk in a 1 litre jug was the problem with the short wand?

BTW Greg have you made an offer on the coffee related bus listed there as well ?

This brings back memories of my sons workplace (auction house) advertising a grinder as being made by Attenzione.

They also had a few by the little known German brand - Achtung.

When I worked in the newspaper industry I keyed in an advertisement for a camper van, the seller wanted it listed as a "Voltswagon Krombi", it was run in the Kalgoorlie Miner newspaper.

Came across a used giotto for sale recently...listed as nothing more than a, "coffee machine" and could only see the pic once you went past the listing. Had no offers. Took pity on the guy and emailed him - he ended up getting what the machine was worth.

Bought a "fassenhaus" grinder in as new condition once - its not an uncommon mistake

Actually for the buyer- descriptions like this can be gold. i bet that machine sold for less due to the sellers ignorance. a lot of bidders wont know that the machine works as it should. i look for descriptions like that on ebay.

I have a chuckle every time I see another "cast iron" atomic listed on ebay. There is no such thing.

Once there was an ebay seller who claimed that as his Atomic was dull grey- it was "the original 1954 atomic" - because "they couldnt polish alloy in 1954" when the Atomic was invented.

when I corrected him on the multiple errors in his claims he responded thusly in the ebay listing:

" The shiney atomic are sixties models and later and also clones are light and shiney. www.coffeecrew.com has 2 clearly defined pictures of these differance in their write up on the atomic. they are well respected for their knowledge on atomic. You will note the 1950 atomic which is identical to mine and the shiney aluminium red atomic which is the 1960 version but not the original one.
So no the 1950 light alloy or shiney atomic wasnt available back then...Sorry!"

ha ha. Absolute rubbish. Atomics were available from 1946 onwards- and were always shiny when new. The red atomic actually dated from the 70s not the 60s. And the ebay sellers atomic dated from the 1970s. he went on in righteous ignorance:

"Without the bon label on head is further indication of very old model and importation into ausralia by someone other than Bon i.e. Italian Australian couple. Happy to keep updating your lack of understanding about the Original 1954 Atomic"

Well Bon only began importing around 1970- and their early imports did not have the Bon label. So again his claims were completely wrong.

I pointed this out. He responded as follows on the ebay listing,

"ANNOYED CLONE SALESMEN BOMBARDED MY INBOX AND QUESTION PAGE BECAUSE I DARED EDUCATE PEOPLE IN AVOIDING

PAYING BIG MONEY FOR REPLICAS BEING PASSED OF AS THE ORIGINAL 1954 ATOMIC.

TO THESE PEOPLE I HAVE YOUR ADDRESSES AND WILL NOTIFY EBAY THIS TIME IF YOU START UP AGAIN AND WILL NOT BE RESPONDING TO YOUR QUESTIONS!!"

ha ha. it was too much.

I saw one last night on the bay of evil for a
Silvia Rocky grinder.

I half expected to see an Audrey, but it was just a Rocky.
V. cheap at the time too.

You have all forgotten the "As new condition" for something that is obviously not, and my absolute favourite "Be the envy of your friends".

My current pet hate is "Eames era" some of the the morons on evilbay need a lesson on Eames design. Seems anything with a curve on it is eames era > Some items advertised as Eames would have the Eames turning in their graves :
