    Re: unsure and need help

Thats what sawaya meant by "grind on demand".
Its called "doserless" because it doesnt have a doser.
Which is a chamber that catches all the grinds which you then dose into the portafilter by hitting another handle.

      Re: unsure and need help

hmmmm ok i finally made that coffee i was talking about.

it certainly came out at a nicer consistency though i forgot to time the extraction!!
plus i forgot to actually measure it! i just let it run until i think there is enough in the glass LOL
so i tend to let it run more in the mornings and less as the day wears on LOL

      anyhow tastes great.

I didnt change the grinder setting this time, i think its pretty fine as it is now from last coffee, it is almost powdery.

i tampered it evenly, though i am going to invest in one of those cool looking steel tampers not this plastic 1 i have that is off topic though!

and it was still sloshy at the top when i removed the portafiller
maybe not AS sloshy though .

actually now i am having a bit more of the coffee it has a bit of a powdery?? aftertaste or something. Still nice though lol

I just saw that link you posted Koffee Kosmo off to view it now Thank you

        Re: unsure and need help

ok i just watched that video link!!!

        Thank You Koffee Kosmo!!

i can see some of the things i was doing wrong!!!

i was filling it about halfway and then tampering and then filling a bit more and tampering again and then again!!!! rather than just filling it up and then tampering!

also i was sort of pushing down a bit rather than the push and twist action on that link!!!

that all makes so much more sense now!!!!

and after having more of my last coffee i think it was a little bitter the after taste not powdery LOL

i am enjoying this journey bitter coffees and all LOL

        Thanks guys for your help!!

          Re: unsure and need help

ok well this morning after 3 hours of sleep i filled the single basket and i overfilled it so i couldnt attach it to the machine properly ROFL
i was feeling a bit icky from lack of sleep anyway, i tried to empty a bit out but after the second time i removed a bit and it was still too much i gave up and took the dog for a walk LOL
had an early start at work anyway.

so all day i have been waiting to come home and have a coffee!! LOL

anyhow i just made one and i also measured a shot and i have been making like double shots but using a single shot of coffee, if that makes sense.

so i made just a proper single shot and it came out a tad too fast, not a lot just a tiny bit so i am going to still play around with the tamper because that could be my problem.

I ended up using the bathroom scales to give me an idea of what 15 to 20kg of tamper force feels like and i have not been tampering with enough strength.

before i change the grind consistency i will play around with more tampering.
Unless one of the expert coffee snobs here suggest otherwise??
          always open to suggestions

          BUT!!!!! NO MORE SLUSH!!!!! WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions so far!!! 8-)

I really am thinking i need a nice new shiny tamper though! the plastic one sort of just rubs or something?? plus it doesnt fit in properly, a little small so i have to do the edges kind of separately. Or am i just being anal and trying to blame the tool rather than my lack of skill?? :P

well either way it will look nicer and feel nicer ;D

            Re: unsure and need help

Remember what I said above about tamping to the correct level and use it as future reference

That applies to single and double shots
to much coffee and the PF cant lock or if it does lock it may be breaking the puck

Yes get a good tamper I hated my plastic one

              Re: unsure and need help

yep KK agreed on the tampering which is why i thought i should play around with my tampering before i play around with the grind.

I know the level of coffee i now need in the double shot basket, but hadnt had a chance to play around with the single shot one at all. So will do that as well

thanks for the head up on the good tamper *thumbs up* makes me feel like i am not just imagining things

i just did a bit of a search before and i think i might have to go the Pullman one.

They look awesome. Bit pricey and having done an internet search i can obviously get ones cheaper that look good etc... but i dont want to in 3 weeks time wish i had got the Pullman one.

so do you think in about 3 weeks time i will have the whole coffee making stuff worked out properly? or is it something that takes a while?

                That would be tamping Oonga

As for getting Art meets Science worked out, I reckon I have made a million shots over way too many years in a whole heap of cafes and I still learn something every week.

That said, good coffee, machinery and consistent technique will take you a good part of the way. Can I also suggest you invest in some quality training as no amount of reading and looking online will provide the benefits you will receive when you invest in a good course.

                Enjoy!

ROFL ROFL thanks for the correction there, i feel like i am tampering at the moment LOL

oh gawd!!! i cant believe you mentioned a course of some sort!!! i was thinking about that this morning, but put it down to 3 hours of sleep LOL

I keep promising people around me i will NOT get into roasting beans, i mean what is the point when there are plenty of great roasters out there already..... someone suggested i was trying to convince myself!!!   :

ok so do you or anyone else have any suggestions for courses that are in the Melbourne area, that do not take too long like not more than 2 days or so and are reasonably priced??

<<<<<<<<<<<<&l t; William Angliss Coffee Academy runs great (inexpensive) group classes each week from late January onwards in groups of up to 12 participants. Their trainers are excellent. I know as I used to be one of them and still occasionally do a gig there. The classes are conducted on commercial machinery.

Other possibilities (a little more expensive) are very small groups on your own machine or bigger stuff (Makin Espresso and Genovese) or even one on one (Talk Coffee).

                    Hope that helps.

                    Chris

                      Re: unsure and need help

yes after my previous post i checked out the sponsors and saw the William Angliss coffee Academy. They have the coffee at home course which looks sufficient for a start.

after your post just then i also looked at Talk Coffee and their course looks great too!! where they come to your home!!

It would be a little more expensive but my partner would be doing the course as well so not that much more expensive I guess??

Would it probably be more beneficial to learn on my own machine? or would i be able to take the skills i learn outside back to my machine? or is that too individual a question? LOL

                        Hi Oonga,

I have taught the coffee at home course at Angliss. It will not be sufficient- being more about plungers, stovetops and cheapie machines with pressurised baskets. Id suggest you do ABC and Advanced Espresso if you go that way.

Id definitely use your own machine if possible and either bring it to the training site or do something in your home.

Dave Makin is a superstar barista and great bloke. I hear the fella from Talk Coffee is pretty affable as well...

Its got nothing to do with his name, does it 2mcm?

FWIW, Ive found him to be pretty knowledgable from my dealings via the CS Forums.

Ok Chris thanks for that feedback, I did wonder what the point to the other machines such as plungers etc would serve in my quest.

Now that you have put it like that it seems as though i might be better off having someone come here, like the Talk Coffee guy??

By the way who is Dave Makin??

From what i can tell his courses seem similar to the william angliss ones??

                              is that right or not?
