  • unsure and need help

    Hi Guys,

having read posts here it is obvious that i am very much a newbie to the world of coffee LOL
we have had several coffee machines that have broken down, sunbeam and the latest one was the Delonghi Magnifica.
so we decided to go with the Expobar from a coffee place in mornington.
It is the Expobar semi automatic? the cheaper one in the range anyway LOL

we are having the issue of when we have extracted the coffee and remove the um thingy with the coffee in it, i know it is shameful that i dont know these terms
there is water in it and the coffee appears to look like slosh ??

is this a case of overgrinding the coffee? over tampering it??

I have tried to grind it coarser but it seems to then come out too quickly??

any ideas guys on what i am doing wrong??

    Re: unsure and need help

Sloshy pucks generally indicate underdosing. Try filling the basket more. If the extraction speed is okay, youve probably got the grind and tamp right.

As per Flatwhite and you may need to go finer rather than courser..

Fresh beans and a good grinder are the base of a good coffee...

The Coffee machine is what will allow you to get Great coffee.  So to some extent we need to know what and how your preparing the raw product.

1: What grinder do you have ?

      2: What beans ?

3: Where and when did you get your beans ?

4: What setting on the grinder.

If your using a cheep grinder < $200 and beans from a supermarket, then you will have some hard work in front og you.  Not imposable but not easy.

        Re: unsure and need help

wow that was a quick response! Thank you
how long should my extraction take?

just before i ground the coffee a little coarse and tampered it down a fair bit more than normal,
the coffee make out i thought too quickly, like in a thick stream?
        and it was still slushy!

I will definitely try adding more coffee, i thought adding it to the line was the way to go but will go a bit over the line and see how that goes.

Good thing i am staying up late tonight gives me an excuse to have yet another coffee LOL

          Re: unsure and need help

Every machine is different with regards to the level in the PF basket.

          1: Fill and tamp..
2: Lock the Group Handel (thingy that holds the PF basket)
3: Un lock and see what the top of the coffee looks like...

You keep doing this until you can JUST see the impression of the shower screen or shower screen screw in the coffee...

Then you know that your about right.... An then know where you should fill and tamp to.

From here you will then need to play / adjust depending on the type of coffee and what grind you use... As the Coffee will expand differently..

You looking for about 30 ml in aprox 30sec and to have a firm puk that can be knocked from the PF.

IberItal, i dont know which specific model in that range, the guy sells them for $290 but gave it to use for $250 as we bought the machine as well, if that helps?

a packet that came with the machine that the shop roasts themselves. It is called Robertos and i think from memory it is the Columbian roast. I just spotted the coffee snobs beans so i am going to order some of those next time

ummm this question i cant really answer as i dont know?? it just has an arrow and the words fine so you turn the knob towards the arrow for fine and then the other way for coarser. i cant see any numbers on it though

any other question that will help i am happy to answer

now i am starting to wish i had found this place before we got our machine

              Re: unsure and need help

Sounds like your grinder and beans are suitable..

See my post above as to tamp level etc.

I would suggest that an admin should also move this to the right forum as that way you will get others that can assist.

                Re: unsure and need help

                Hi and welcome Oonga
Grind - as a starting point grind to a consistency of salt and adjust from there

How fast should the coffee run
                Consistency of honey

How long does the pour last?
                25 to 30 seconds

Tamp pressure is 15 to 20 kg

To get the correct height / depth of the compressed puck
You must test by adding or removing coffee as required from the basket that fits in the porta-filter (that’s what they are called)
so the puck just clears the water screen on the machines group head

You will need to turn home and remove the porta-filter several times until you get the depth level right and use that for future reference

                Hope that helps

                KK

                  Re: unsure and need help

yep AngerManagement i just tried to fill and tamper as you suggested and then lock the Group Handel as you said and i have indeed been underdosing as Flatwhite said!!!

i did notice that it was a little too coarse from before, i literally just had a coffee but had to go and try your technique and it was much better!!! Thank You!!!!

Yes i was not sure where to put this to be honest, that is why i put it here
i hope this type of question has not already been answered hundreds of times and i somehow missed it in my search

next coffee i am going to use more coffee, grind it a tad finer again and time the extraction

This is getting exciting now LOL

                    Thanks for your response

In regards to your response to the coffee should run at the consistency of Honey,
is that affected by things like the grind of the coffee and the tampering and the amount of coffee used? or is it a machine thing?

                      All of the above
So practice , practice , practice and it will become second nature in time

R.E.  honey as in running from a spoon down to a piece of toast

Also I recomend this video tutorial link by Scotty Callaghan

                        Re: unsure and need help

                        Welcome to Coffee Snobs Oonga.

The speed at which the coffee comes out can be affected by different things.

More coffee in the basket will slow it down.
Finer grind will slow it down.
Stronger tamp will also slow it down but only to a small degree.

When changing any of the variables, only change one thing at a time so you know what effect it has.
If you change two things at the same time you wont know which did what.

Your new machine is more than capable of producing an excellent coffee.

                          thanks for that Thundergod.
i think you hit it on the spot there i have been changing the lot at once!!
changing the rate of the grind, tampering more or less!
now that you mention it i realise how stupid that was LOL

ok so for my next coffee i will just add more coffee as i now know that i have been underdosing.

must be due for a coffee now anyway LOL

                            Re: unsure and need help

Hey Oonga, just saw your questions..With the Ibertal you have to turn the knob quite alot to make any movement..try turning it more and more, you will see the blades moving closer or further away..also when you fill yur basket, make sure you tap it a couple of times before you tamp it, that will move all the coffee in the right places to fill your basket..Is it a grind on demand grinder? If so its the Ibertal Challenge!!

hmmmm not sure about the demand grinder?? what does that mean??

and i cant actually see the blades?? there is like a canister? type thing on top that you fill with coffee beans and the coffee beans cover the grinder, plus the cannister thingy for the coffee beans is sort of tinted? Does that make sense?

ok i just did a quick google search and found a link to the same grinder that i have:
