  • Upgrade from a Gaggia Baby D? Help!!!!

    Hi there,

I currently have a Gaggia Baby D. Ive since been on my Barista course and realised that Im never going to get decent milk using my machine. Ive made the mod of adding the silvia milk wand which is better, but not great!!!!

Anyway, Im looking to upgrade for my birthday (in April) which is the only way to get the expense by my wife!!!! Im looking to spend $2k for a grinder and machine give or take!!!

Can anyone recommend a machine / grinder? Im currently looking at the Diadema Perfetta and a Racillio Rocky grinder..........but am happy for any guidance.

Ill be using it for a couple of coffees in the mornings (work days), and about 6 on the weekend. I only make 2 at a time normally, with the odd occasion of about 6-8 when we have guests around!!!

    Cheers Paul

      Mr Shaw,

We have a great selection of machines that youre very welcome to try any time. And of course, you can pick our brains for any advice or knowledge you were wondering about.

If youre at all interested, send me a message and we can organise something at the Melbourne DiBella Coffee Roasting Warehouse or at the Brisbane Warehouse, whichever is more convenient for you.

      Kind Regards,
      Mike

Hi Paul and welcome to CS,

Your budget will get you some great gear but Id suggest that you might consider pushing the grinder to a Compak K3T- which is superior to the Rancilio. Alternately, there are plenty of Rancilio mod tips within the grinders area.

The Perfetta definitely leads in terms of build quality and ease of element replacement. I love the ball-jointed steam wand and you will find that you can get consistently great results with the Perfetta. Temperature is controlled by 2 thermostats, Silvia style, but the e-61 group makes for a much more forgiving machine than the Silvia.

You might also consider the Vibiemme Vashetta (aka Piccolo). I like it because it has a rheostat on the boiler which allow for accurate calibration with a Scace device. We do this on all Vashettas and feel that its essential. This machine is a little less expensive than the Perfetta.

Cooked elements, which can happen in all dual purpose, single boiler machines are easiest (read cheapest) to replace in the Perfetta.

These machines are great for espresso drinkers who make a few milky coffees. You will however find them slooow for 6-8 milky coffees. You will aslo need to learn to prime the boiler after you texture milk. I recommend that this occur after each texturing event so as to prolong element life. A great guide can be found at: http://www.espressocompany.com.au/downloads/DomobarUserGuideSteaming.pdf

We have both machines on our Melbourne demo bench and ship anywhere as well.

You are more than welcome to make contact if we can assist.

        Good luck in your search.

        Chris
