Flushing the unit will speed up heating of the machine and grouphead quite quickly
You dont need to flush as much water as you would think to heat the grouphead
Make sure you have the portafilter attached to heat it as well :
The added advantage is not wasting power and paying for it
I do it every now and then when I need to (read slept in)!!

I have had timers fail before, so I dont trust them >

During normal times, ie during the day or evening, I let the machine heat up normaly for 35 - 45 minutes.

Or put your timer on a timer.
    hehehe, love it!

I have occasionally run water through the group of my Isomac to bring her up to brewing temp a little faster, seems to do the job without any dramas!!

Of course the easiest solution is to remember to turn the timer on
Or put your timer on a timer.

    Question:
Does Flushing Speed up..... Warmup?  and

running hot water through ................the group head would get everything up to temperature faster?

    Answer:
Yes. But b4 doing that wait until the boiler has reached operating pressure. Then you can start flushing water through the group a bit at a time - say a cup full of water at a time. If the element doesnt switch on between cup fulls, make it so by opening the steam valve and dropping the pressure. Say 30 secs or so after the element trips off, flush another cup full and repeat. Feel the group. You will notice marked increases in temperature each time, until the group gets so hot you cant keep your hand on it more than a few secs. Then you are good to go. Dont forget to have left some hot water in your cups to pre warm them during this process.

Works for me on my (....different brand model) machine.

Throw a tea towel over the group head. Keeps the heat in and heats up a bit quicker.

    Cheers

think of it this way - the only way to get energy into the machine, is by making it switch on the boiler, and using its 1400w or whatever. As long as that energy used does something to heat it up on the way out (ie as long as the water cools between the boiler and the drip tray), then its transferring heat into the machine.

curiously though, i notice ulka pumps dont sound very happy when they are cool, and get less noisey as they warm - but im sure it doest hurt them using them as soon as the bioler has heated up the first time.

ok based on that logic, then you would have to be a bit careful. I.e run only enough water so, that you only have boiling water coming through from the boiler and not new cold water.

I normally would not flush too much water, but good to get this thought process down.

So based on your thinking, it is possible that the boiler is pretty quick to heat up, but the whole machine / Group Head takes longer.
    My thinking too.

My boiler is up to temp in about two minutes.
    Steaming is then possible.
But the machine is still stone cold at that point.
Which is why I also have mine on a timer to beat me up by at least an hour.

Saw something on CoffeeGeek about the Nuova Simonelli and it mentioned recovery time on the HX when pulling many shots in a row and steaming, i.e. the water was not back at the same temp on subsequent shots.

So based on your thinking, it is possible that the boiler is pretty quick to heat up, but the whole machine / Group Head takes longer.

    Interesting

My VBM Piccolo gets the water in the boiler up to heat in a very few minutes, while the whole machine requires about 30-45 minutes.

I can only think that running hot water through the group would heat it faster, even if it required the boiler to re-heat.

VBM DS - Does Flushing Speed up or Slow Down Warmup?

    Hi

I have a timer on my VBM (HX) and forgot to put it on. I normally have it heat up for an hour or so before I make coffee.

I only had 35 mins as had to get to work.

Now, the question that has been bothering me, does flushing speed up or slow down the warm up.

One side of the argument that I pondered was that by flushing, you were introducing cold water into the boiler which would slow things down. I am not talking about a lot of flushing, maybe 5-10 seconds.

On the flipside, running hot water through the machine and the group head would get everything up to temperature faster?

    Any thoughts?

    Ben
