I was budgeting say up to 3 grand for both...
    Hi Craig
I was in a very similar boat - and with some ringing around and a great special from Cosmorex I picked up an HX Diadema Reale & Macap M4, plus a few extras for a fair slug under $3k - and cant be happier! Ive used a number of fully auto machines, which are all in the $1500 range, and small manual machines, and they all work OK for 12 months, then toss it all in.
This HX style of machine is all steel, brass and petrified wood - Im always happy to pay the extra to get something I can hang on to! And they even make beautiful coffee too! The grinder is also the goods - clean, quiet and precise.
Im in Tim the Toolman (wired on espresso) heaven! :P
    Happy hunting!

Also what Doser based grinder would be good for this too? I am leaning towards the Rancilio Rocky.

    Thanks
    Hi Richard,

The Rocky doser will not satify your requirements. Firstly, its messy, leaving lots of ground coffee in the base when swept clean.

Also, the dose is permanently set for the thimbles (aka baskets) provided with the Silvia- which everyone turfs because theyre too small.

Keep in mind that coffee stales very quickly as well. A dosing chamber full of old coffee will not produce a good cup.

For mine, doser grinders start to become good when youre in Mazzer mini/Compak K3PB/Macap M4 territory. By this time you are well into the $750+ range.

    Chris

    Hello,

I am currently looking at an offer from a website online which would include a grinder, a scace temp calibrated Domobar Levetta and accessories - this is just over $2K.

What HX machines are equivalent or better than the Levetta

Also what Doser based grinder would be good for this too? I am leaning towards the Rancilio Rocky.

    Thanks
Is the domobar you at looking at HX?

searching yields mostly the piccolo been called the levetta, which is a single boiler design - which is what Im expecting given bit over $2k including a grinder.

If you drink espresso only, then its hard to see why you would want a HX for mine. HX is about doing the whole milk based drink easily and efficiently imo

This is easily the best value machine currently available to suit the OPs budget and requirements (and I still cant believe it hasnt sold yet)
Had a number of people interested at the start, but looks like the wives have been putting their feet down pretty heavily.    :

Havent even had one person come by to even look at the machine as yet, and have been tempted to put it up for sale elsewhere.  The only thing is that Ive grown fond of her and Id rather she be well taken care of by another CoffeeSnob, so Im just leaving her at my parents place and making coffees for them every time I go over.

Anyway, back to the OPs question - for that price, any of the machines should have commercial parts and build to last, and even if there are problems should be easily repaired.  I would recommend a HX or double-boiler machine if you plan on making milk-based drinks.

Oh... and make sure you get a decent grinder - at your budget, there are heaps of possibilities from the Rocky to the Macap/Mazzer.

    Hi.

Exciting time - picking a new machine.

I have an Elektra, as well as an ECM Giotto. I like em both, but youll find the ECM is more user friendly, and probably cheaper.

Why? Bigger drip tray, less cooling flushes needed (particularly if you get the thermostability mod from Chris at Talk Coffee), can dispense hot water, the whole lump doesnt heat up and burn the unwary (just the group head, which can really decorate your belly if you arent alert when filling the reservoir), and ability to put taller cups under the group head.

On the other hand, that Elektra is a cool looking beast, and can make a good espresso, also steams milk servicably. The other limitations can be accomodated. And jeez, it looks so much better than a crappy Sunbeam.

If you arent in a hurry, keep a look out for a good 2nd hand machine - most are pretty good. I dont have experience of the Sunbeam you mention, but would give them a big miss, especially since you can afford something a whole stack better.

Where abouts in "country vic" are you?

    Cheers,

    shaun

I was set to go the same route - silvia & rocky, but after a researching a lot here and looking at specs of machines i ended up with a Bezzera BZ99 & Macap M4 stepless , the total of both gave me some change from $3k to get some great coffee and some accesories.
There are a great deal of machines available as you know, good luck in your journey & choice.
I have just started discovering howlittle i know about coffe - but looking very forward to what lays ahead.

Thanks guys for the fast replies, I actually have considered something such as the Sunbeam 6910, looked at it in the shops, seems solidly built, but ive never had any good experiences as far as sunbeam and breville reliability go... A bit concerned about that aspect as I live in country vic, but then I guess any purchase you can get a lemon.

At the moment lattes are made by making the espreso shot, and heating the milk in the Microwave. Not the most elegant solution... Mind you did have a Nespresso machine at one point as well but I found all the coffees from that bitter.

Budget, well I can go up to say 3K for the grinder and machine. I would be after something reliable, and I figure if Im going to aim to spend up to that amount I would be able to get something that is quality and going to last and produce a great coffee. By entertaining say... the machine should have nough grunt to prepare say 5 or 6 milk based coffees... (Im not running a cafe )

As mentioned I was all set to go the Silvia / Rocky combo, seems like a great machine however Ive read that you can only steam enough milk for say 2 coffees at a time... and thatd be great for me and the other half but no so great when guests pop around....
I would suggest you could do much better than the Siliva and or 6910 and still get change from 3K..

Hi Craig - just as an idea, if you arent fussed on looks, a decent setup with hx machine and good conical burr grinder can be done a fair bit under 2k - expobar office + an iberital/lux or lelit grinder.

At 3k - well the choices are near endless
