  • A Couple of Possibly Silly Questions...

Okay, so now Ive had my HX for a while, Ive got a couple of questions.

Now, as you might have guessed, Im not very technocologically minded (!), so to a sensible person, they might be silly questions, but to me, theyre not...

    Okay, here goes.

    1. When you use the hot water wand to fill the shot glasses up, does this bleed the overhot water off so that you dont necessarily have to do the cooling flush or are they completely separate actions? Or is the cooling flush to cool down the group head, rather than get rid of overhot water?

    2. The boiler in my Marte is 1.3L - does this mean that I can safely fill up a mug for a cup of tea for Emily (daughter), mug of water for a hot chocoloate for William (son) and still have enough hot water for two shots and steaming? As in does 1.3L mean that theres always 1.3 litres of hot water to go?

See, told you they were silly questions! :

Tried the tea towel over the group head this morning to speed up heating time and it worked a treat. It was hot enough at 20 minutes rather than having to wait the normal 30 minutes...BINGO!

Hi Hoyks the water from the hot water wand is from the boiler, when you do a cooling flush you are purging the water that has been sitting in the exchanger lines which gets way too hot if the machine sits for a while doing this brings the water down to brew temp and sweet shots!
When I use the hot water wand to top up tea, hot choc etc the pump runs and refills the boiler, the boiler then needs to reheat the new water so as long as you give it time to recover a bit it should be ok providing you have plenty of water in your reservoir.
Ive had my HX for 5 months now and love it.
    cheers gm

      Hi Di
The boiler and the Heat Exchanger (HX) are 2 separate systems

What greenman has said about the boiler is correct
Its very similar to a household hot water system in its operation

The HX system is like a ZIP boiler

Ahhhh, thanks both, its all starting to make sense now.

I really should go and look at some schematics of how a HX is built, shouldnt I? (toothpicks in eyeballs, anyone? )

Not a silly question at all.
I have just learnt something from these answers like the cooling flush if the machine as been sitting around, i didnt even realise the HX system was different i just assumed everything came straight from the boiler.
I never thought about any of this with my machine, it works great so i use but will try that and see if the resultant shots are any different.

I found a good explanation at home-barista.com. Im not sure how to put in the link, but I google searched hx coffee machine and it was the first one on the list.  I found the article very helpful.
