  • Giotto light on but nobody home

My ECM Giottos light goes on, but nothing else happens. No pump, no steam, no water, no temperature.
The manual says something about circuit breakers, but there is no mention of whether there is one inside te machine.
Im guessing that this means a trip to the repair shop, but Id be greatful if anyone has any info that might help me out.
    Thanks very much in advance!

    Hello ee,

Sounds to me like it thinks it has no water...

Remove the tank and clean the probes in the tank coupling and refill it...Raise an lower a couple of times in the coupling to ensure no air lock.

This should at least give you a pump....If it wont heat after that, there are a few things you can check before heading off to a repairer.

    Good luck

    Chris

You are using tap and not filtered water, right?

            Alrighty,

I think its time to take it to an ECA service dude.

Chances are the microswitch behind the lever is cactus, but it could be a host of other things. If you have been tap water, it more than likely needs a descale as well. If its a few years old, the tech can rewire to 2010 specs as well which will increase the life of the control board.

              Update ;
Just spent $470 on a new control board and service.
Picked it up today and the lever wont go up fully.
Sometimes it will and then it wont.  Feels like the lever will break.
The tech said that it has the new control board and has been wired appropriately.  Pump seems a bit temperamental too.
Is there anything that would cause this that anyone knows of?
Extremely annoying because Im talking a 90 minute round trip in the car.
              Thanks

Yep- sounds like the microswitch needs to be repositioned a mm or so back into the machine so the lever doesnt pinch it.

The board wouldnt have any effect on the pump....If it was dodgy, it will still be.

If there was significant scale in the machine, this can foul the pump and/or solenoid post descale.

                  Thanks Chris -
At the moment, its working. The cam seems to be hitting the swithch just right, but when I turn it off itll stop working or itll do the same thing in 5 minutes time. Also, Im just wondering why the pressure isnt as high as it was. I;ve given it a good 45 minutes!
                  Thanks again

                      Hi ee,

A little lube will sometimes help. Alternately the best solution is to loosen the lock nut a little and then retension it from behind (i.e. with the side off and machine not plugged in).

You should see circa 1.2 bar and a whole heap quicker than 45 min. Give the tank a pump up and down and then switch off and on. See how you go.

If it still takes 45 min from cold, its most likely that all is not well.

                        Thanks Chris,
Im going to brave the traffic and take it back tomorrow. I think it should be their responsibility to correct the problem.
                        Regards

Re: Giotto light on but nobody home

I bought a giotto last year and had a (perhaps) similar problem.  After about a week of use, the water tank connection failed and the pump would not draw water into the boiler and the machine just sat there like a useless piece of junk.  A bit of cleaning the parts and jiggling the refill did not provide a permanent solution so I returned the product for a replacement...only to find the same problem in that too.  The dealer could not fix it and apparently spoke to the manufacturer who recognised that there were some issues with the mechanism in some units.  At least thats what they told me.  Anyway, I returned the goods and got a refund.

What machine did you buy to replace it, or did you buy the same machine but this time from a Site Sponsor. I didnt buy my machine from a Sponsor becasue I didnt know about CoffeeSnobs in 2005, but one of these guys will be my first port of call if I ever need to pay money for servicing.
