Re: ECM Giotto not getting up to pressure

    Hi all,
Im having an intermittent problem with my Rocket Premium plus.  Machine has run fine since Sep 2009 up until a month or so ago (Jan 2011). The issue is that occasionally when I lift the group handle the pump doesnt kick in.  Also (and this hasnt happened for a while) the pump kicks in as normal but then wont shut off when the handle is closed?!

    1. Ive checked the microswitch that actuates when the lever is lifted with a multimeter and cant fault it.  Also checked that it does positively actuate and release when lever is moved.
    2. Water level is good.

    Some other details:-
    1. Manufactured 2008. Machine Model No. - RE771S1A08
    2. Purchased Sep/2009
    3. Gets light use.
    4. Water is filtered tap water

Misc details that may help diagnosis:-
    1. I opened up the machine to see if there was anything obvious and while checking all electrical connections I think that I have a controller that is wired in the pre 2005 style?  I should explain that the reason that I say this is because it was only after closing up the case that I came across the spare parts catalogue found elswhere on this site and repeated here (http://www.espressocompany.com.au/sp...E-13.03.09.pdf) that showed two different wiring diagrams. One was headed pre 2005 and the other was post 2005.  Im sure my controller had the loop wire installed as shown in the pre 2005 diagram which makes me think that this is the case.

    2. I have always experienced steam pressure dropping to around 0.4 bar when texturing milk (2 cups worth)  which I also read elsewhere that that might indicate an earlier wiring method.

Dont know if this would contribute to my problem experienced but if my machine is wired this way can I simply follow the new wiring diagram to rewire and bring the machine up to the latest specs or is it a different controller completely? Is this the same as the mentioned 2010 specs?
I should add that I am in country Qld and cant get to a distributor/workshop easily.  I do however have some skills in electrical/electronic work and could easily do this mod myself if required.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

    No Trent,

Theyre wired to 2010 spec. with 240V to the pressurestat, so Id expect normal board life.

    I think its a 2006 unit.

Yes- Its a 2006 and we sold it to bolb.

We are seeing a a few boards go now in Giotto Premium machines of this vintage.

For those with any GP or similar vintage, if your board is working fine, its a good idea to have your service bloke upgrade the wiring to 2010 spec. It takes the load off the board and will promote longevity.

If your board has been replaced, check with your service bloke that it was rewired for the new board

    thanks for the explanation Chris

    Hi Chris,

Will this problem present itself on the Rocket GPPs?

    Hi Mal,

Most likely the element relay on the control board.

Its a 30 min job and involves a new board and a partial rewire to bring it to 2010 spec.

    Sorry for the bad tidings.

started a topic ECM Giotto not getting up to pressure

ECM Giotto not getting up to pressure

    Hi All
Sad day to day, the Giotto doesnt want to get to full pressure.
Turned it on this morning, light comes on but after 30 min was still stone cold.
Turned off then on again, when i did this i heard what i think is a solenoid make a click noise and then i could hear the element start but after 30 min the group head is hot but very little boiler pressure.

Turned off for 10 minutes and then on again and its now back up to full pressure.

Is this a symptom of a major issue??

    Mal
