  • Recently bought ECM Giotto

    Hi:-)
I am a newbie and have recently purchased an ECM Giotto second-hand. The pressure builds up to around 0.9 bars. My brother has an identical machine but it builds up to 1.2. I have read that the pressure should be around 1.2 bars. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should do?David

Hi David and welcome to the CS forums.

Does your Giotto have 1 or 2 gauges? The boiler pressure should be around 1.2 and the pressure at the group when pulling the shot should be around 9.

I thought ECM Giottos only had one gauge for boiler pressure so am a little confused as to why yours appears to be measuring group pressure. Hopefully someone more expert will come along with a wiser response (Chris where are you?)

Unless he grabbed a Professional 2nd hand somewhere? :-?

Giotto Classis/Premium/Premium Plus are all boiler gauge only, so you need a p/f gauge to test it. 8.5-9.0 Bar is great.

        Re: Recently bought ECM Giotto

        Welcome to CS David.

Taken on face value it would seem you are reading the steam / boiler pressure gauge and it is stopping at 0.9 bar which is on the low end of normal in this market or in the right place for the Italian market.

Not following the logic behind not wanting to use it until a blind filter is obtained and used. Surely the machine is in operable condition and will make coffee regardless?

If you are in any case buying a blind filter suggest also buying a group head brush. In the meantime, wipe out the group ring with a stiff brush and cloth and enjoy the thing/.

David, congrats on the purchase. .9 as others have said is a little on the low side. 1.2 is about right but its easy to adjust.
Pop the lid off and adjust the pressurestat. Its on the left side with a little adjustment screw on top.

Other then that just use it and enjoy

            Congratulations.

Remember to unplug before you crack it open.

              Me either.... :-?

In a pinch, you can use an appropriately sized piece of rubber to convert a standard Double Filter into a Blind Filter. Maybe youve got some unused Silicone Rubber baking trays sitting in the back of a cupboard - Ideal. Just dont let Mum catch you....

.9 bar is just fine. The only reason youd need to turn it up is if youre finding the steam power insufficient.

                  I disagree,

At 0.9 Bar, the group temperature is likely to be low- leading to sour shots.

                    Re: Recently bought ECM Giotto

depending on the Giotto - you may require a 1/8th to 1/4 turn clockwise...on others, you may need a full turn clockwise.

On mine (Giotto Premium with a single gauge 2009) - I have the earlier and required a 1/4 turn cw to move it from about 1.05 to approx 1.2. Id suggest going easy at first, test and then adjust up further as necessary.

good machine - mine is having a few leaks years down the track but is fun having a go at fixing it!
