Thank you thank you thank you Lacehim - all fixed now.

    The oil worked a treat.

Now to wait 40 mins for it to fire up. Late start to the day but better than never! ;D

Hi Lacehim, thanks for your reply.

Sorry I was a bit unclear - I mean the shower screen seal, not a gasket. It only gets cleaned on the inside when I backflush, and eventually gunk builds up around the outside from overfilling the basket (not me of course) which makes it hard to get the portafilter into position, which is why Ive taken it apart today.

Im still struggling with it, Im now back to the screwdriver method. The rubber seal is not hard or worn out but it is getting the death of 1000 tiny screwdriver cuts today.

So is it the group head seal your talking about?

Get some hot water, put the seal in it, then fit it. It will stretch better. Also you can use rice bran oil to give it a bit of lube to help it slide in.

If the group seal is a year old it might be better to put another one in. As they get old they harden up/wear down.

The metal showerscreen part can be cleaned with your group handles and baskets on a fortnightly clean when you backflush your machine.

Hello folks, I have an urgent but small problem.

I (stupidly) decided today was the annual day to take out the shower screen on the old La Pavoni and clean up around the seal. I backflush regularly but I like to do this once a year to clean out the gunk that gets up around the outside of the seal

Ggaaaaahhhhh!! Now I remember that last year when I did it I couldnt get the thing back together easily. The rubber gasket just slips and pinches and goes in one one side but never the other... I am nearly to the point of wrenching the whole thing out and turning the machine upside down and taking a hammer to it.

I have tried gently knocking it back in by putting the showerscreen and gasket in place, then using the basket and a small mallet to try to exert some even pressure all round.

Ive tried a stumpy screwdriver, which works okay until I get to the point where one bit of the gasket is still bulging downwards. I push that in, and it pops out somewhere else.

I should probably fire up the atomic to take the edge off though. Hands shaking from lack of coffee....

    Ggggaaaaaaaaahhhhhh again!!!

This is absolute torture! Does anyone have any suggestions? And would it be silly to lubricate the seal with silicon spray so it slips in easier? or would that be disgusting?

    Thanks in advance :-/
