    Thanks Sniff and Mal.

Thats exactly what were planning to do!! Ive been wanting to test drive some top end machines for a while but wanted to wait until ours was on its last legs so that I didnt really know what I was missing and kept thinking ours made good coffee!!!!

    Welcome "tagajaj"... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Youre very fortunate mate, to have CosmoreX (and Attilio) at your doorstep. An absolutely top-notch and professional outfit, who will look after you long after the purchase has been completed.

I agree with Sniff too; setting up a visit to test-drive different machine combinations is the only way to go. Plus, itll be a lot of fun to boot.... [smiley=laugh.gif]

    All the best mate....

    Mal.

    Welcome tagajaj to coffeesnobs.

Take a trip out and visit Attilio at Cosmorex - it doesnt matter how many threads you read here, until you see the machines in person you wont know what you like and what you dont like.

Enjoy the coffee journey and may your upgraditis be not too painful!

    Cheers

    Sniff

    Hi all,

Like Creon, this is our first post to CS - but Im sure it wont be our last. Its finally time to upgrade our poor old Sunbeam. Its taking ages to build up pressure and our guests are having to wait quite sometime between cups.

Were looking at the Diadema range and will probably take the opportunity to retire our Moulinex grinder (inherited from my wifes grandmother!!) at the same time. Fortunately for us we live in Canberra and according to the posts, have a very informative and helpful person in Attilio at Cosmorex.

Attilio, if youre reading this, you can expect a PM to arrange a visit!!

My 5 year old sunbeam EM6900 breathed its last yesterday. It was with a spectacular clunk that included coffee grinds and hot water spurting everywhere. The disappointed look on my father in laws face as he realised his coffee was the next one in line and would now never be made was probably worth the face full of coffee grinds I was wearing. I knew it was on its last legs and had already begun the search for the next unit.

Im in a similar place to Creon in terms of wanting to get something that will keep me entertained for a few years as I learn but also that can produce something decent now (with my current Sunbeam entry skill level!). Reading through a few of these posts most people suggest getting to a sponsor and having a good chat and a play. Has anyone got any tips on a Brisbane based sponsor that might be able to help out?

    Thanks!
Group collar screws have let go..

Try Supreme Roasters if ya south-side or Di Bella Coffee at Albion.

    Welcome Creon,

Best bet is to short list a few machines which you like the look of and then come along and Ill tell you what I dislike about them. There is no perfect machine out there and whats right for me may not neccessarily suit you anyway. There are great looking machines which produce rubbish coffee and vice versa.

Its by comparing nuances that you will choose the right machine for you- which is what this is all about.

I am not a big rap for the mini-e as there are better options out there for a similar spend. The mini manual is an excellent grinder if you want a doser grinder.

Youre most welcome to arrange a time to pop in and have a chat. I have a few favouriets in your price bracket and I am happy to explain why. Im sure youll find the drive worthwhile.

    Happy shopping

    Chris

Im in Melbourne, and I think theres a joint called Coffee-A-Roma nearby in Camberwell. Ill check out a few in the city maybe too. Is there any brand or model of HX that floats your boat?

With a budget like that, its certainly getting into serious money territory. All the ~$2300 HX machines are probably going to suit you fine, as are any grinder in the Mazzer Mini price bracket.

Its really going to come down to looks and feel. If youre located near a sponsor, it would be best to go in and try them out.

If not, youre just going to get a list of people coming in recommending the machines they have, because nearly all of the HX machines that the sponsors sell will be superb for you.

Hey guys, this is my virgin post, so be gentle.
Im a first time buyer, and very new to espresso machines, but Ive done a little bit of research. I want a new, quality machine (not Sunbeam, Saeco, etc.) that can adapt with me as my barista skills improve.
I was interested in the Silvia since everyone seems to rave about it, but I was looking to spend a little bit more cash so I can appreciate the machine past my novice years. I really would prefer an HX model, and maybe E61 if possible. I thought maybe an Oscar or the Isomac Tea, though Im not all that into the "domesticated" look of the Oscar.
Id also like a Mazzer Mini grinder for the same reason as stated above. I like the Electric mod B model, but I dont know if they have those here in Aus. In addition, Im not sure if the electric model worth the extra $$ over the manual model. Ive heard good things about the Vario too.

    So, my question is:
With $3,000 (give or take a few 100), what would be the best HX manual/semi machine and grinder you recommend for someone whos about to embark on the lifelong journey that is quality espresso making?
Working...
