  • Looking for an upgrade of espresso machine

    Hi falks,

Im just getting bored with my Gaggia duo (classic and mdf),especially after swithcing to specialty coffees.
While, regarding grinder decision was already made to Macap MD4, still Im not sure what to pick up regarding espresso machine.
I like the most ALEX II DUETO, but as Im strictly pure espresso shot consumer, not sure whether all these properties Id need (f.e. dual boiler system for shots and steam).
PID is a must to b able to balance temperatures of brewing.Tank of 2L is quite enough, also.
So, Id need help to pick "the right" machine for my purposes.

Few facts more: I take 5-6shots per day and my budget is up to 2000USD.

    Any advice?

What about the Alex II (the HX version, not the dueto dual boiler)? There are other options but its within your budget so why not get the best?

At the other end of the scale you could get a PID Silvia.

Re: Looking for an upgrade of espresso machine

Its the machine Im also considering. I think you can turn the steam boiler off to reduce power if you just make espresso, BUT when friends come around you have a full blown machine that also does milk drinks, and no flushing to drop temps ..... Im drooling for a dual boiler machine with pid.
I think expobar also make dual boiler and pid, and theyre cheaper (30%) than the duetto, in australia anyway.

        well,

Im hardcore straight espresso fan. no sugar, no milk. Nothing than black gold.
Alex II would be perfect,to have even "milk drinks" various options, but as always, money matters, too.

Basically,Id like to detect price difference between ALEX as TOP choice and a "best buy" machine according to my needs and than decide whether tgo invest a few greens more for Alex or not.

        thx for help, guys

el c, go to a store that sells a variety of quality machines. Try the same coffee from various machines in your price range and I will be surprised if you cannot taste the difference between one and another.

In my experience, different machines do present a different tasting outcome and you will prefer one over another.

            Hello el c,

I think that even a simple HX machine is far beyond your requirements and a great single boiler machine such as a Diadema Perfetta would meet your needs really well. An Alex Duetto would be massive overkill IMHO.

It would not be too difficult to add a PID to take the place of the rheostat which controls temperature resulting in tweakability of what is already a deadly shot machine. The occasional milk coffee is no problem at all with these machines.

I think you could save a good proportion of your money to spend on something else- maybe a big conical grinder?

            Chris

I concur with the master! Possibly lower your expectations on the machine, and look at a big conical grinder (eg. Mazzer Kony-e). For a pure espresso drinker, you will notice the step up in shot quality.

                thx for kind advices.
as Im a complete newbie in world of espresso maschines cant determine trully gap between f.e. Silvia with PID and Alex Duetto on the other edge.
I fully accept suggestion about investing in higher range grinder as my needs go up to grinding for aeropress and french to make delicious cup of coffee as it sits right now in front of me.
should take any importance about e61 commercial group?

any concrete suggestion for machine, beside diadema?

according to mazzers retail policy for 2011, seems there is no Kony anymore as superjolly e has been introduced.

That means basically, Robur as the only conical grinder (beside volcano and industrial grinders).
                  Looks very strange.

From my point of view might change m4d to m7d

You sure about that mate... :-?

Mazzer still list the Kony-E on their website and for what its worth, the Super Jolly-E is in a completely different category of use. Im sure that if Mazzer had this intention in mind, our Aussie distributor and vendors would have heard about it.....

                        Mal.

obviously jolly cannot substitute kony. but I cant see it at their retail price list (valid possibly for italian domestic market)

Id just like to apologize for missleading information posted.
Obviously Kony is there and still will be there. I just got retail price list from LM retailer where Volcano was offered as replacement for Kony. Volcano Mazzer make just for LM distribution.

Re: Looking for an upgrade of espresso machine

getting back to my openthread story in the meantime I became a proud owner of K-10 wbc. Still cannot decide about espresso maschine and need more advice.
However as a pure espresso shot customer, basically decided to go for quality single boiler maschine with PID and e-61 group.
But,cannot find such a maschine existing.
Quickmill Silvano,Silvia,Lelit Pro or Ascasso have a PID,but dont have e61 gtroup, whilst IZZO Vivi is,as far as I saw HX maschine but with all my requirements.

                              There are two questions:
1/ how much importance really has e-61 group  for quality espresso shot?
2/ from pure espresso shot aspect which type of maschine single boiler/HX is easier for using?

                              thx in advance guys.
