Have just had my Giotto P.P. serviced. Since I got it back, I cannot make a decent brew. Same fresh coffee beans, same grind, tamp, method etc., but now I get loads of water on top of the puck, foam under the puck, mess everywhere when I remove the group head and the coffee tastes nothing like it should. Can someone suggest what the problem could be, before I take my machine back to the service agents? Have tried all sorts of different grinds, and wasted a lot of beans trying to sort this out, but to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks......

Re: After service problem - Giotto
I assume you mean "mess everywhere when I remove the group HANDLE" (rather than group head).
This, and more water than you are used to seeing at top of puck could mean the exhaust / pressure relief when you finish brewing is not operating properly...and then again.... I could be talking through my hat
because there is no substitute for actually seeing what is happening rather than guessing from the safety of a keyboard.
Note however, it is not at all unusual to see water at the top of the puck immediately the group handle is removed, and if that water disappears into the grinds almost straight away then it is quite normal and nothing to worry about.
There is only one correct advice and that is:
Take it back.
If the repairer doesnt volunteer to do this straight up, ask him (her/) politely to kindly switch it on so you can show him. Have the machine on before you take it in so it doesnt take long to get it back up to operating temperature to demonstrate.

Must admit, this one had me scratching my head...Originally posted by 1412050E14130B09600 link=1310088169/3#3 date=1310107582Foam under the pucks a new one

Cant imagine anything other than a deliberately blocked Spout that would cause this and that would be very unlikely... :-/
Attilios advice is the best by far mate....

I have seen this in cases of underextraction. :-?Originally posted by 6066717A60677F7D140 link=1310088169/3#3 date=1310107582Foam under the pucks
What coffee are you using and when did you last adjust grind and/or dose?

Re: After service problem - Giotto
thanks everyone - I have decided to take it back and demonstrate to them the problem. As I said, I know its not me - I have been using the machine every day for over 2 years, have fresh beans from Pioneer coffee that I always use, and have tried adjusting the grind both ways. This is second time I have had the machine serviced, I did not have this problem last time when I got it back. Thanks everyone again for your helpful suggestions.

Re: After service problem - Giotto
Andy - I thought the same thing initially. Because it has been so brass monkeys here on the Sunny Coast I thought maybe that had affected the beans, but didnt know whether that would mean finer or coarser and theres only one way to find that out. So I experimented both ways from fractionally to ridiculously and the problem still remains - wet sloppy puck and foam underneath and the only thing that changed was the speed of the pull (and obviously the quality of the taste and consistency - although most of them went down the sink!)
Its got me beaten!

Re: After service problem - Giotto
Thanks everyone for your help. I took the machine back to the service centre. They said that they adjusted the pressure. It is working just fine now, and I am happy that there was no extra charge.
It would be nice to know why it happened in the first place, whether it was something that they did during the initial service, or whether this is something that just happens after a bit of use?
