Im confident that this stands true for most workplaces......

But when I hear of attempts where these initiatives fail, invariably, the underlying root cause is either a) running costs or b) people.

By people I mean a variety of reasons. In the workplace, youre generally dealing with people who dont share your same level of coffee enthusiasm so expect the initial excitment and interest to taper off and even faster once the machine suffers its first breakdown. Then theres the crowd favourite falling on one person to keep things clean and have it well stocked.

Be careful if you dont necessarily want to be that person.

The machine is totally my responsibility at home but Im no ones mother at work!

    Hi,

Thanks for all your opinions. I appreciate all different advice as someone may have a concept I hadnt thought of. We did look at the capsule idea, but decided that the costs would end up too high over a long period.

    a) if choosing a saeco, the royal capp is the one to go for in my opinion rather than the royal prof

    b) you are in WA so its a good bet we know where the saeco on your office and attendant coffee came from. The suppliers philosophy on coffee differs markedly from what the general CS community would like. That is simply an individual supplier thing, there is room for all, and you have done the right thing if you were not happy with the original set up.

    c) A well sorted auto office coffee machine like the saeco mated to good coffee makes quite an acceptable coffee in the office, if different to what CS members would like to have at their home or in their favourite cafe. Life is full of compromises depending on the situation, only a tiny proportion of the market are CSs, and for many an auto machine is the spring board to bigger and better things over time. They help ease people into more traditional espresso and help the palate to adjust.

    d) We see this often enough but it never ceases to amaze why office clients would want to rent something of such little value, in a business where it can be written off in the same year of purchase securing a tax deduction, also get their tax credit on the GST, and therefore pay less in one year than the rental wasted in the same year to never own the machine.

    e) There are a few things that can be said about the N machine. You have covered three...the cost of the coffee (which is a huge hidden cost), the small portions (because the portion is for a euro style ristretto not an Australian style capp or latte in a mug) that often necessitate double dosing, and the character of the resulting coffee.

The thing not mentioned is the considerable difference in the amount of empty (and non recyclable) packaging left over. Compare an empty 1 kg packet, to the equipalent amount of packaging for enough capsules to make the same umber of coffees as the kilo of beans.

There are also the politics of normal, logical, intelligent, right thinking human beings allowing themselves to be tied up to a machine where only the one type of product can be used in it.....right in the bottom end of the market (cost wise) where almost anyone with a job and a steady income can buy any small end machine any coffee beans they want to without having to tie themselves up. Pod machines were designed with one thing in mind...to tie you up...nothing to do with cleanliness / lack of mess / portion control /isnt this wonderful (not).

The philosophies behind both of the last two points are becoming very important in some quarters.

There are lots of opinions and all are welcome, and my own is I would rather see a well sorted automatic espresso machine than a capsule / pod machine go anywhere..

I think I will check out the Saeco Royal Cappuchino
    Gday Kris
where I used to work, I arranged a rental Saeco Royal Professional (similar to the Cappuccino model I believe).  The coffee was dreadful, so I ignored the strict instructions from the supplier and tweaked the grind, dose and preinfusion settings - basically set the finest possible grind and highest possible dose - and we got it to a point that the coffee was acceptable.
Eventually the boss decided that rather than pay $1700/yr (was $33/wk) for a rental, he can pay $700 for a Nespresso lattissima.   Now you will find that the N word is a swear word on CS, but even though I thought the Saeco made (slightly) better coffee, the rest of the staff in the office all preferred the N***** (for both taste and convenience).  As an office solution they are quite handy.  People can choose decaf or any other capsule, and you could buy a second milk canister for soy.  Most people who havent experienced anything better than average cafe coffee find Nespresso to be excellent flavour.  Of course the difference between that and a good coffee is enormous, but youre not comparing it to good coffee, youre comparing it to instant and superautos, and it does compare quite favourably in that area.  the cost-per-cup is higher (excluding machine cost), and the capsules are quite small, meaning you cant really make large coffees without them tasting very weak, or using 2 capsules which makes the cost-per-cup even higher.  Still, might be worth considering.

    Welcome to CS.

In my own opinion $1800.00 wont cut it.....minimum good autos start at say $1999.00 and go up from there.

In Saeco you are looking at the Royal Cappuccino.

In Jura you are looking at the S9, which is a thousand dollars more (than the Saeco).

These are "small end" dedicated office coffee machine and I would not recommend any domestic machines for this purpose.

There will be little difference in the coffee produced by each, and each requires someone "in the know" to set the machine to produce best possible coffee with whatever beans you go with. It is the same situation as with a traditional machine and grinder.....dont expect an auto to work properly as set to default settings straight out of the box.

In the business world, you are best served to purchase from a specialised office coffee supplier ( such as my own company) where you wont be delivered a sealed box as you would if you buy by mail order without any service, or from a dept store. That is, specilaist traders will work it out for you and help you get set up.....that is why their prices may be a little higher and of course there is a reason because you are contracting them for their specialised services.

Give us your telephone number (off line of course) and we  will do our best to help). Send it to our email address:

    Automatic Machine for Workplace

    Hi,

A group at my workplace is looking at buying a automatic machine to provide an alternative to the horrible instant coffee that is provided.

We are prepared to pay up to around $1800 for the machine.

We estimate it will produce about 15-20 cups a day.

From my brief look around on the site I can see most people will probably steer me to a more manual machine as it can produce better coffee, but this isnt really practical for work. (I do have a manual system for home

We are looking for something that has automatic bean grinding, the facility for adding pre ground beans (for decaf), auto milk frothing and the ability to also froth soy (can be through a wand or with an additional milk cannister). It needs to be simple press button for a standard coffee (ie non decaf, non soy).

We would like it to have automatic cleaning functions, but Im happy to spend 10-15 minutes giving a good clean once a week.

Ive looked at a few Delonghi, Saeco and Jura, but Im not sure what is going to give the best coffee. Im sure there are other brands out there that are good, but not sold in your Harvey Normans etc.

    Advice and Comments please

    Thanks
Working...
