  • Domus Galatea arrives out West

    Well I just joined the club, my new Domus Galatea arrived this afternoon! It has taken two attempts and a lot of freight, but now it is here, and wow it is a pretty nice looking machine.

    Living up in Port Hedland makes finding a good machine difficult, considering there is not even a cafe that serves a palatable coffee.

    The first machine the machine that was sent through, was dropped by the freight company which destroyed the frame. The only good point about this was the speed at which Chris, from Talk Coffee was able to jump up and down on the freight company, and organise a replacement machine so quickly.

    As luck would also have it, this was also the same day my Pullman arrived

    Heres to practice and some good coffee shortly

      Im thrilled to hear that it arrived in one piece Chris- May many Godshots come your way...

      Stay tuned CSers for some pix to show just what the apathy and incompetence of freight companies can do to a beautiful piece of espresso art which has shipped 1/2 around the world with no damage. I guess that shipping it either upside down or on a side (ignoring markings) is a good start  >...

      This machine looks like a banana and the rear legs are about 5cm into the machine body from where they should be. Whether it may become a renovators opportunity, I am unsure. I am too scared to turn it on before its assessed.

      Needless to say, no freight company accounts are being paid at the moment- in case they delay payment. This palindromic company are a disgrace.

        Would that happen to be TNT Chris? Ive had some interesting deliveries from that useless company when using the "specialised" service. Its obvious they throw the gear around!

              I am sure it will bring out your inner barista Hey its a Bezzera and congrats on your new purchase (Domus Galatea is a beautiful machine)

              I know you are still getting to know her but on instinct alone how would you rate her.

                Well considering on what I started with before hand to what this machine is I really think this is the goods.

                The machine performs really well in terms of ease to use, after reading about people having difficulty mastering the steaming of milk, I was a little unsure as to what the difference would be, but seriously it is a breeze to get that part right. Milk can easily be done in the time that it takes for the extraction, with micro-foam and a gloss like shine to it.

                What is proving a challenge is getting repeatable shot extraction, I am still working at getting a consistent technique. However aside from the user variation, I am getting some really nice coffee out of this. The user is the biggest area for improvement.

                The machine itself looks so much better in the flesh, the photos available for it simply do not do it any justice, it is easy to fill the drip tray is big enough and easy to empty.

                I am using a synesso double basket with it, because that is matched to the Pullman tamper, however the there is marginal difference with this to the original basket.

                I could not be happier with this purchase.

                  Hi Chris,

                  I am assuming you have freshly roasted beans and a quality burr grinder (so I wont go there), but you could also consider keeping an eye on tamping pressure variability by tamping on a set of bathroom scales.  This one technique probably helped me with shot consistency the most when I went to a new machine/tamper etc.  Hope this helps  

                  Where are you getting your beans from in Port Hedland?

                    Funny you should mention that, I have already had the scales out on the bench this morning, I was surprised at how little pressure was required to achieve ~12kg.

                    I am currently using some beans that have been roasted and sent over to me from Townsville, QLD. That was the first thing I did ordered some decent coffee, it turned up a couple of days before the machine.

                    The difference in grind settings required between morning and noon is significant up here (I think) using the same beans the grind had to be set finer just then than was required this morning ..... does humidity play a large role or variation in temperature for the grind??

                      Interesting you say that Chris, cause I find the grind setting changes quite a lot (& Im in Melbourne), particularly on those really hot days weve had. And once the air con goes on (& presumably the humidity changes again) I need to alter the grind settings again. Recently, when the weather turned somewhat brisk I had to change again. So, from my experience (which isnt much) I would say that the temperature & humidity do affect the grind setting.

                        Definitely yes!  Even within a relatively stable climate like Perth, cafes can be changing their grinds 10 (even up to 20!) times in a day.

                        I remember speaking to a friend (and restaurant owner) a while ago whos coffee machine & grinder were under lease (ie: she was locked in to buy cr@ppy beans for the next couple of years) and she would get monthly visits from the Service Technician would re-set the grinder and tell her "Not to touch it until I return"  :

                          Alchemist I have actually heard of some specialty cafes in Perth making up to 150 grinder adjustments a day.

                            150 a day in an 8 hour day = 1 adjustment every 3.2 minutes.
                            When do they have time to make coffee?

                            At that rate each proceeding customer would be the guinea pig for the next one.
                            So the shot runs a tad quick, never mind send that coffee out the next one will be better.
                            Next customer might get a decent shot.
                            If its not quite right, the 3 minutes is nearly up so theyll have to adjust the grinder again in order to have another stab at it for the next customer.

                            I doubt it.
