  • Rancilio S 27 loud clicking noise when cold

    Hello Everyone.

Just wondered if someone might have an idea about a Rancilio s27 s loud clicking noise that the machine makes when powered on first thing in the morning ( ie. still cold).

The pump does not turn on at that stage , but later when the clicking stops it does, and the machine operates fine .

    Thanks for the input.

        Hi Graham .

        Thanks for the reply.

Only had the machine for 4-5 weeks , its an E-bay " beauty".
Using a flojet pump to draw water from a tank below.

Have been doing some elimination work on it and I am pretty sure that the loud clicking noise comes from the water inlet solenoid (Lucifer 220 V 50 Hz 9 W).
Do you know if these solenoids can rattle / click at least twice as loud as the normal noises associated with operation??
Also, while it clicks no water is being drawn into boiler.

When things warm up a bit ( say 20 -30 seconds of clicking) the machine will start functioning properly and clicking stops.

        Thanks for your help.

mine arent loud (at least I dont htink so). im no expert, but why dont you unplug the machine, then unscrew the bolt at the top of the valve and slide off the coil. Then unscrew the 4 screws. Then you will be at the plunger, and check if it is clogged/sticking. Also you could swap the coil with the three way valve (pretty sure they are excatly the same from memory - but double check) and see if all is good with the water inlet, and then problems with the group. Then you will know if you need a new coil.

            Thanks Damian.

It seems like a good idea to swap the two coils, provided they are identical.

Will do so later on tonight,

The plunger is not sticking ,all clean inside , but it is very noisy indeed.
I presume that the plunger makes the rattling / fast clicking noise.

            will post " the findings"later .

              Issue seem to be resolved.

After appr. 6-7 hours of frustrating guessing ,swapping things like solenoid coils, a conclusion was drawn that the control box is not working properly.

Pulled it out ,had a real good look at the back of it and it seemed that it was shorted out by some black looking stuff more than likely cofffee grinds.

Cleaned it up, put it back.... and magic happens...at least so far.

              Thanks for the interst.

Good that you figured it out. And nice that it was a cheap fix! How are you finding the machine by the way? Do you like it?
