In October I am going overseas for about 4 weeks. What should I do with my Giotto during that time.
I simply give it a normal detergent backflush if it is due and then empty the boiler.

When finished with the machine, turn it off and remove the water tank. While the machine is still hot, direct the hot water tap into the sink or a container that can cope with at least 2 litres of boiling water. Turn the hot water tap on and let the hot water drain out of the boiler - tilt the machine by raising the left side to help drain it as much as possible.

Then thats it. When you come back, make sure the water tank is full and the hot water tap is off and turn the machine on. It will fill the boiler - takes up to a minute - and away you go when the machibne gets up to steam.

Also flynn I note that you flush about a litre through after you clean with cafetto
Always clean water flush after a detergent backflush (to remove traces of detergent) and then pour a seasoning shot. Directions should be included with the backflush detergent.

Oh and, yes, do clean your water tank occasionally even if you use filtered water.

I was wondering what to do for when one goes away.

In October I am going overseas for about 4 weeks. What should I do with my Giotto during that time. I assume just leaving it there with water is most likely not right.

Also flynn I note that you flush about a litre through after you clean with cafetto is that for any particular reason or just something you personally do?

After cleaning I make a shot with some slightly stale grinds and am good to go. I just got that from the cleaning instructions really.

I have actually never washed out my water tank to be honest. Since inserting it I have just re-filled with a jug of filtered water from my tap.
    :P

I suspect my brew temperature is a little low.

Can I take any useful measurements from either the espresso or water directly from the group head?

I have an infrared thermometer and highly accurate Thermapen.

Also, how can I tell if the machine needs descaling? Its been in storage for 6 months.

any recommendation on a good bean to start with?
No, not really. Do you already have a favourite brand?

I wouldnt go for an expensive bean for obvious reasons. Why not grab some Talk Coffee Urban Blend from Chris for a starter or some CoffeeSnobs Wow from Bean Bay?

Picked up a GPP from Chris on the weekend
Congratulations on your new purchase and I applaud your choice.

Good advice is to stick with one bean for a while and get used to grind/dose/tamp with it. That way you are eliminating one variable.

If your entire kit is new and you arent experienced on prosumer equipment you might want to book some one on one training with Chris to achieve better shot making quicker.

Picked up a GPP from Chris on the weekend (well my wife picked it up)

    - still playing with grind, dose and tamp, but pretty happy with the results so far.

All this experimenting has taught me one thing , I dont have an infinite capacity to drink coffee!

Re: Giotto premium plus - desktop background

For you die-hard GPP owners heres a link to a GPP desktop background. Just open it and select the command to set as Desktop (right-clicking on a Windows machine gives that option)

I havent checked the timing of the boiler duty cycle on mine but it doesnt sound like there is a problem on yours.

Servicing: I make 1- 2 double shots per day on weekdays and 3-4 on weekends. Only use filtered water from under-sink filter cartridge unit.

Daily - brush grouphead after very shot when finished use blind filter to jiggle in grouphead to ctach grounds thta brushing misses. Clean water backflush

Weekly - empty and washout water tank. Wipe over external surfaces (this may de done more often on the front panel and drip tray.

Fortnightly - detergent backflush (Cafetto). Drain about 1L of water from boiler after it heats up.

Ive only had the GPP for about 4 months so havent done a de-scale.

Re: Giotto premium plus- discussion thread

ECM advises an annual service which includes replacement of seals and a descale. Just had one done in Brisbane after seven months (the machine was in for a steam arm replacement anyway) and it seems to be running hotter now - shots are hotter and steaming is quicker, so I guess there must have been some scale build-up. Also, they lubed the water and steam swtiches which are now much smoother.

    Thanks for that Mal

What kind of servicing regime to other Giotto owners use? Our machine is pretty low volume (5-10 a day).

    Welcome "nm"..... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Definitely within the normal range mate so I wouldnt worry too much about it. Someone else with an identical machine may be able to check theirs out for you by way of comparison....

    All the best
    Mal.

    Hi Guys,

Ive owned my GPP for almost 5 weeks now and just wanted to check my pressure readings with other owners (going purely by the gauge).

MAchine has been on a number of hours before taking readings.

Boiler turns off just before 1.2 bar
    Peaks at 1.22 - 1.25 bar
Within 30 sec drops to 1.1 bar
Within 1min 45sec drops below 1 bar when the boiler turns on again
    Repeats above

So every 2 minutes or so, it gets below 1 bar and starts building pressure again.

Is this normal? Never having the opportunity to compare to another GPP, was hoping some fellow owners could check their machine for me.

Lastly, when closing the steam wand, do you get water spitting out (not during open, only during closing) of the steam wand?

    Thanks for your help,

    -R
Hi all, long time reader   Im coming up to 12 months of Giotto ownership. Ive just moved the machine to a different part of the kitchen where I can hear the machine better, and now Im really noticing the thermostat activity. I dont recall it clicking this often when new.

After about 45 minutes of heating:

    Boiling band: 1.05 - 1.1 bar
    Peak: 1.15 bar
The boiler turns on for 5 seconds, off for 28, repeat.

Since the warranty is almost up, are there any other problems which I should be looking out for?
