Hats off to Pedro at Coffee Parts, replacement seals are on the way, all sorted, without any fuss and with the usual great service that all sponsors I have dealt with provide
Thanks guys, I will order a couple of spacers today, and also let the supplier know that my machine, and others I would expect use the 8.5mm seal, so that they can either change or give the option on their parts list.
The VBM DS and DD take 8.5mm as evidently do the Jrs as I suspect you have just discovered. The only problem is that as your seal wears and compresses from age the PF will go further and further towards "3:00." You could get some .5mm gasket material and make a spacer to co between the gasket and the group.
I have just replaced the group seal (bought 2 ,from a sponsor, of course) on my VBM Junior, now the group handle is locking in at 5 occlock, instead of 7, as it had previously, and as did my old Silvia, the seal does look a little thinner, I would say that the old one was 8.5mm, and the new is 8mm.
Is this an issue? (other than in my head) Is it likely to cause wear problems on the group handle? Does 0.5mm make that much difference to where the handle locks in?
My housemate just changed his VBM group seal and shower screen - we ordered 2 of each to save on postage since they need doing ~6 months anyway. Coffeeparts have just recently added a VBM section which has all the parts you need (ie. no longer need the Brasilia part - sorry Mal ).
Chris I remove the shower screen seal and clean under them on a regular basis
As others have said if its gone hard its time to change
If you leave it to long it will develop cracks and split
A good idea is to have a spare seal on hand as I do, in my case I also have a spare shower screen as well
Hey Chris,
Yeah sometimes its better to change it sooner rather than later. 18months is super long on one seal IMO. Even if its still sealing, if its uber hard its gonna be wearing out the brass around the grouphead and PF, rather than sealing in plush with the rubber seal. Ive got into the habit of changing mine every 6 months just to be safe.
Thats awesome Mal R, I have dropped them an email as I was not sure which brand was compatible. Will order a shower screen too as I regularly wedge it out with a screwdriver.......running for cover......
Probably a little more than $30 as freight to NZ ;D
Coffee Parts part number is 516528-N, It is listed in group seals as a Brasilia seal, might as well get a replacement shower head (526100) as well, just in case there is a drama getting it out. If you go to domestic machines (not spares) and scroll down, appropriate parts are below. Less than $30 all up including freight.
As to when, if it has gone hard, or is leaking, or you destroy it taking out the shower head for cleaning/servicing, or you want to replace it. But I am sure there are other opinions.
How do i know when to replace rubber gasket (dont even know if thats what its called) on my VBM super. When cleaning today i noticed it had a couple of very small nicks out of the edge and it must be getting on to 18mths old?
Cheers
ps: looked on Coffee Parts web site (GROUP SEAL) :-[
