  • Rocket Giotto vs VBM Domobar Jr?

Im tossing up which to buy, as my first machine.
Rocket Giotto, or the new Vibiemme Domobar Super Junior (1.5L HX boiler)
Theyre a similar price & size (important for me) and have similar capabilities as far as I can tell.
But I havent used either of them personally (other than a quick play around in the shop).
For people that have used both, or know the details of each, do you have a preference?

Im particularly concerned with useability aspects..
    - Warm-up times
    - Quality of controls
    - Easy of keeping clean
    - Steam power
    ...etc..

many thanks if you can provide some help!

Shame youve got no response, Id be very interested in hearing about the super junior too. Sounds like it might be a nice alternative to its bigger brother if like me, you dont really need that much hardware.

I dont think many would have much experience with the domobar Jr as its a fairly new machine.

IMHO, when you step up to machines at this price range, there isnt a whole lot of difference in performance when you compare the two.

Bigger boiler on the giotto will give you slightly better steaming power. The stock steam tip on the giotto is easier to handle/use compared to VBM tips. Might have a better recovery time with a bigger boiler as well.

Control wise, theyre all lever operated machines, giotto has roundish steam/water knobs, VBM has triangular knobs.

With keeping clean its pretty much the same.

Just down to aesthetics and special offers that are available at the time of purchase I guess.

Whichever machine you choose, you wont be disappointed.

I would imagine the warm up time to be the same regardless in this prioce bracket.
I have a giotto and ensure a minium warm up from cold of 30mins, 45 if i can wait that long.

Re: Rocket Giotto vs VBM Domobar Jr?

          Hi skelly,

As others have mentioned, the Domobar Junior has not been available in Australia. Thats about to change.

ECA will have the Domobar Junior on the bench at Aromafest and it will be on and running.

Final spec (as I understand) is 1.5L boiler and the fit and finish is usual VBM standard.

Warmup times etc are typical e-61- so allow at least 30 min wherever possible.

          regards

          Chris

            Cheers for the replies!

Yeah its a close match for "best in class"!

Bonus points for each, as far as i can tell, are:

            Rocket:
            commercial pstat
            350ml larger boiler

            VBM Jr:
            slightly cheaper
            300w more heat
            larger & better drip tray
            a second pressure dial
(may also have a superior thermosyphon restrictor)

Not sure if any of these will make a difference to me tho.

Hmm...not likely...The DS needs a small cooling flush which is not required in the Giotto...I guess that the Junior may be similarly configured.

I think that Rocket probably has the edge here at present....Nevertheless, all VBM gear is terrific!

Yes if i can wait that long but 30min will also do the trick.
As mentioned by someone in another post today you can wrap a towel around the group head to speed up the process but it should not be left on for any extended period.

not meaning to second-guess you 2mcm, but our (office) Domobar Super Lever doesnt require a cooling flush. Pours @ 94-95C straight through the shot, last time it was scaced.

Interestingly, trying to temperature surf on either of my HX machines is almost impossible

(apart from possibly the icepack/tea towel method)

Thats the whole idea with HX machines though (apart from the first shot in a series), to provide Brew Water Temperature that is consistent from shot to shot and intra-shot too for that matter. Well designed and engineered machines, especially those that implement the E-61 Group properly, do a great job of achieving this but are not suited to someone who wants to chase a water temperature on a shot to shot basis. They just arent designed to do this. If this is important for someone, then they really should be looking at a decent 2-Boiler machine with adjustable temperature facility on the Brew Boiler (Water Heater )....

Or, stick with a Dual Purpose Single Boiler machine that has a nice implementation of one of Jims PID Kits :P

Well, thats true, and thats why Im not a massive fan of the Minore III. Brew Profiles + E-61 to me =

Problem is finding a PIDd double boiler single group machine under $7200, or I think Id be all over it like a rash.
