Thanks for the quick reply Antony, Later on tonight ill have a look when i get home, odly enough although my grind is a little more coarse and i have to tamp with more force my coffee is quite nice now, could this be needed because group water temperature is a little hot and if the boiler pressure was lowered slightly i could readjust the grind and tamp with a more normal tamp pressure ?

The pressure seems a little high based on other Musicas we have sold. The Musica does tend to fluctuate pressure on the guage, surfing .2 bar is quite normal. You might want to decrease the pressure slightly if you feel the temperature at the group head is a little high. To adjust the pressure remove the drip tray and you will see a small hole on the right hand side. If you look in here you will see a red dial that you can put a small flat head screw driver in to dial the pressure up or down. (it is marked + and -). Depending on the model you have you may even have the Sirai preostat if it is the professional model.

Hi all, ive been the owner of a black trim Musica for around a month now after upgrading from a silvia and find i have to have my grind a little more coarse than i did with the rancilio.

I notice that the boiler pressure guage reads 1.5 bar before it cuts off and goes down to about 1.3 bar before going back up again. I think it sounds a little high and was wondering what other Musica owners cycle at ?

Id also suggest that you should only need to descale every twelve months or so if you use filtered water and, that being the case, it would probably be a good time to get the machine serviced as well.

I figure that a service every year or two is well worth it and only a really minor amount to pay in comparison to the initial outlay - you get a well oiled (well, cleaned, anyway!) machine back.

OK I will only use 1/2 a measure in future.  Thanks - previously had a sunbeam and they had tablets so I never had to measure.

I to am a bit worried about a descale as I am getting close to that stage.  Any suggestions as I dont think it would be that difficult? :

I use half a Cafetto scoop and follow the instructions on the tub. ie 5 runs at 5sec on, 15sec off. Then flush out blind filter and then run 10 times 5sec on, 2 sec off.

I was doing this religiously weekly then read another thread saying that fortnightly was sufficient (since I only do 2-4 coffees a day).

Then flush again the the first pour tip out. Never had any chemically aftertaste.

Am more concerned about when it comes time to do a descale - think I will find a local tech to do that.

The manual leaves a lot to be desired

Ive only ever used ¼ teaspoon, about half-a-scoop from the Cafetto tub. I do clean my machines weekly though, never let it drag out longer than that.

Its not really about the quantity of coffee you put through the machine you know, its more to do with the oxidation processes of coffee oils left behind. This progresses at the same rate regardless of the amount of espresso shots made and the ongoing heating/cooling cycles accelerate its transformation into a kind of tar.... :P Nasty stuff indeed

Thanks Stan, good to know. It amazed me that a company as big and caffeine-driven made absolutely no mention of backflushing in their manual!

Re the amount of cleaner - with the Musica and also previously with the Maver - half a teaspoon (or probably 3/4 of a scoop) is more than enough to clean out the machine. Id hazard a guess as to youre overdoing it a bit and thats why its taking you so long to get the chemical taste out of the machine afterwards. Mine only took about 5 times running through clean water shots, plus I ran some water through for a little while before I pulled my shot the next morning (probably about 10 seconds worth) and there wasnt any chemical taste at all.

I do mine every 2-3 weeks. I use caffetto and do as you did but I also ran a lot of water through afterwards. I found that chemical was still coming out after 3 -5 flushes with the blind filter. So I ran water through it for about 5 minutes (emptied the resevoir). May be I am using to much cleaner :-/ 1.5 measures (spoon came with the container).

Hey all my fellow NS Musica owners - has anyone chemically backflushed their machine yet? I did it last night, but Im not sure if I did it correctly - the E61 Maver was a little bit easier to work out because you could use the pressure guage as an indicator of how long to backflush for, and you could see the results immediately because the release valve was obvious, so you could see when it was clean.

Basically last night, I just put some cleaner in the blind basket, turned it on for about 15 seconds and then back off again, repeated two more times, then did the same without any cleaner for another 4-5 minutes to clean it out.

I would not consider it a compromise. You can manage the pour yourself or use the preset function so you get the best of both worlds. I found it a very easy machine to use and it was not complicated hence my better half now uses it as much as I do. It is a HX machine therefore I see it as an alternative to the traditional style machines. Whilst it is at the lower end of the scale for purchase price I believe you still get an excellent machine - but then again I am biased as I own one.

According to the mechanic who fixed the teething issues (see the other thread), it has commercial quality parts internally.
