Hi Gents. I knew I wasn't going mad. Over the years of project and maintenance work on cars I think I have a feel for what feels mechanically right and what feels like metals in distress. The new cam looked much better finished and no indents running crossways to the action of travel of the cam. Once it and the valves wore in as a working set it has become progressively smoother and is again a joy to use.

So I put the above down to a quality control issue at the factory that through the great service of Di Bartoli has been sorted.

    Cheers

Could be right CafeLotta, does sound a bit like a farting noise.

Also is this noise as the pressure build into the puck normal on an E61 (can't imagine it is...)...noise was there with old cam in also. Cheers

If you want to try some MolyKote 111, drop me a PM with a postal address and I'll drop a small amount in the mail.

I'd give it a fair bit of time then mate, and see how it runs.
Might be worth it, just to satisfy your curiosity, to see if you can find someone (maybe a decent cafe) who will let you pull a few shots on their machine(s) to have something with which to compare...

Hi Mal. Not many. My main point of reference was when my machine first came to me and having put through 1kg of coffee. Cheers

Just out of interest Oz, have you ever pulled a lot of shots on an E-61 grouped machine before you bought your current machine? If not, maybe it's down to just getting used to your new machine given that there are reasonably strong forces at play inside the E-61 group when you operate the Lever...

Are you able to get access to another E-61 grouped machine to compare the 'feel' to yours. It maybe that you just need to become accustomed to it...

The cam is actually Bronze, not brass...

Don't know about the noise in the vid and this is highly unlikely as your machine is new and my old '61 banger is nearly 60 years old but when I lubed up and assembled the right hand group there was a metal grindy sort of feel when moving the lever because the end of the cam shaft was pushing up against the wall of the head.. I sorted it by simply adding another Teflon washer which brought the shaft out by about half a mil. Unlikely as said but it's easy enough to add another washer even to just tick another possible cause off the bucket list. I was going to machine the head slightly but it was easier to just leave the extra washer in.

Thanks gents. So its as back to being almost as rough as what it was. I lubed everything (even where the end of the camshaft enters the housing, the cam lobe, the internals of the cam housing and rubber seals for the cam. The cam was sitting nicely as were the pins when it went back together. It was great for a day...then progressively notchy as the lube wore off.

I am going to live with and put up with it and hope that to some extent the mating surfaces match/pair up with wear patterns over time and it either doesn't get worse or, hopefully, gets better. Down the track maybe a chromed cam is on the cards but really it shouldn't need it and Bez make these machines with brass cams (with how much chrome is on the machine, and their impressive factory I would have thought they would chrome the cams if my problems was a common experience).

    Cheers

I get similar from mine now and again Oz, never really pinned it down, sounds to me like a valve opening/closing, have never bothered to chase it.

Sounds like it could becoming from the motor/pump/pipework where something may be rubbing due to the motor torque on start-up. You would have to remove the covers and start/stop the pump a few times to help focus on what it might be...

Doesn't mention Bezzera so would need to be checked. No cam is listed under the Bezzera parts heading.
Just for interest sake, the Bezzera part number is the same as all the above. On Ascaso and CP anyway.
