  • Decision between Rancilio Sylvia and Rocket Giotto PP

    Dear all,

This is my first post here and firstly best wishes for 2011 to all - I also hope I am posting in the correct section of the forum.

I am interested in one of the machines above and still confused as to a final decision.  I would like some opinions and help in deciding and so I am giving a bit of background for my use.

I am just off another machine, Gaggia espresso bought back in 1997 which is now giving me quite some trouble and so I am considering another unit.  This is just a very basic machine which has served its purpose.  Travelling quite often to italy where the espresso culture is amazing, I know that a good machine will give good coffee and so before making a decision I am considering various options and am ready to spend some good money in return to enjoying great espressos and cappuccinos as per the quality I can get from a bar.  I am very fond of using the moak coffee beans and also have a deLonghi grinder.

As regards usage, the machine will be making between 4-6 shots a day between espressos and capuccinos and then the occasional monthly dinner with friends where one needs to pull shot after shot to serve.

So my first question is, what is the difference and what will I be getting for the price difference between the two machines.  Also, With the Gaggia, when I make espressos, I have to wait quite a bit until sort of the pressure releases and I can remove the portfilter for another shot - is the Sylvia or Giotto equipped with something that allows to remove the portafilter right after the shot in order to make more shots without having to wait.

Another concern for me is the fact that both for Rancilio and Rocket, I did not find any agents here in Malta so I am really cautious as to the fact of what will happen when the machine needs any kind of service, maintenance etc.  Of course there are a whole lot of catering services on the island and I believe respective technicians on various machines - but would they be able to carry out any work and also what about parts that may be required.

Can you recommend any links of reviews of both machines or someone with experience on both provides some comments.

    Look forward to replies.

    Best wishes
    emann

If I would you I would get a machine that has local support, just in case. Although of you are electrically savvy then you may be able to impart any repairs required yourself.

I have gone from a Silvia to a Giotto and the Giotto makes life so much easier. With the Silvia you need to be 100% on top of your game every time you use it, with the Giotto the E61 group head is much more forgiving.

They both have 3 way solenoids which means you can remove the group handle as soon as you finish pulling the shot.

With the Giotto you can steam the milk at the same time as you pull the shot, this is a godsend if you are making many drinks at the same time.

    good luck

I have just upgraded from a Silvia to an Izzo Alex, my second choice was the Giotto PP. I would echo the comments above, the Giotto will be much easier to work than the Silvia. I am now getting fantastic consistent coffee and still have a way to go in getting my tamping/dosing consistent.

We used the Silvia every day for about 8 years and it is a fantastic reliable machine, only one thermostat failure in that time which cost about $20 to replace.

I would just add talk to CS sponsors - a great source of good helpful information.

      Cheers

Ive had Sunbeam 6900, Silvia and Giotto.

If you can afford the Giotto get it you wont look back. Team it with a good grinder tho.

The monthly dinner with friends might be a challange for the Silvia. You will spend way more time making coffee with the Silvia than the Giotto. Especially if the like Lattes.

I did 100 coffees in about 2 hours or so with my Giotto at a function before Chistmas and it didnt miss a beat.
