  • Unico Splendor broken - help!

My beloved Diadema Unico Spendor is poorly and I need advice.  The machine has been producing brilliant coffee until the last month or so, when it developed the issues listed below.

Im in Hobart where theres no dealer/local specialist knowledge of these machines.

    Heres the symptoms:
    * When pouring a shot I get water gushing from the overflow below the group head - roughly equal quantities coming from the portafilter and through the overflow port into the tray.
    * The shot has no crema - just black espresso with a few crema-coloured spots on top.
    * Water is dripping from the group head constantly. (Sometimes  hissing and spitting, with steam coming from the group head)
    * When backflushing I get a soft dribble of water from the overflow chute instead of the usual sudden, forceful "whoosh" of water.

    Machine details:
    *Approx. 3 years old.
    * Only used (Brita) filtered water.
    * Used once every week day, 3 times each Sat and Sunday.
    * Backflushed ~ every 3 months with the detergent supplied by Cosmorex (Plus 3 times in the past week to dislodge a blockage, if any exists)

Im thinking perhaps a solenoid valve?

    Any ideas?

Yea 3 way valve is not working correctly / Electrical Fail or STUCK open.

Many thanks AM. Please pardon my ignorance, but is the 3-way valve another term for the solenoid, or a different part?

Re: Unico Splendor broken - help!

The solenoid directs flow of water from the pump to the group or boiler as required. If if fails, one or other will be compromised- sometimes causing an overfill of the boiler for example.

The e-61 group consists of three valves which may be open or closed according to the position of the lever. The seals in one or more of yours will be cactus. See #519545 at http://www.coffeeparts.com/faema/faema-spare-parts-2.html

It may be best to replace all three pistons with newies and the seals can be tricky to remove (nb- the faema part may not necessarily fit- get OEM parts). You will probably also have some debris on the sealing surfaces- which can impact on the quality of the seal. A soak in backwash detergent and a clean will help to ensure a good seal.

Any competent machine tech should be able to fix this, but theres no reason not to do it yourself if you prefer. NB the 3 springs are all different and must go in the correct locations

        Hope that helps.

Re: Unico Splendor broken - help!

Cheers AM. Mr Splendor is at the repairers as we speak. Hopefully he will be back with a clean bill of health soon.

In the meantime my ancient Saeco Via Venezia has stepped in to fill the coffee void. Not quite the same, though....

              Thanks for the follow-up.
