Re: Shhhh I need quiet...
Hello all.
grinder noise in the end is related to the amount of wear on the grinding plates. The more worn they are, usually the higher and louder the level of pitch and volume. Many operators dont notice how much the pitch and volume have increased on their grinder over time, because it is
A) gradual over time and
B) there is nothing else to compare it to unless you have more than one grinder.....
In additon there will be differences between brands and models due to the individual quality of build.
I dont expect there would be a signigficant change in pitch and volume in grinders over short periods of time when used for home use because they dont have enough throughput to wear the plates that quickly. EG, If you use 500 grams of coffee per week and have a commercial end grinder where the plates are rated to say 400 kilos, and you decided to change the plates at an arbitrary 200 kilos just because you want to, then that relates to a time span of 400 weeks = 7.7 years. And you would need to have kept your decibel meter handy to see if you thought the level of noise had increased over that time from the starting point.......
Hope that helps.

Yes, completely undertstand, which is one of the major reasons that I would like to upgrade.Originally posted by 504B425346504B4A45574651230 link=1303955110/0#0 date=1303955110Im not a noise person, especially in the morning, it drives me insane making a cappuccino for my OH at 6am.
In fairness I think that depends which grinder you have. I find that the coffee machine is "too noisy" but my grinder purr doesnt bother me at all.Originally posted by 655146504B7C604C45454646230 link=1303955110/1#1 date=1303955762grinder makes heaps more noise
Then youre not making enough coffee ;DOriginally posted by 655146504B7C604C45454646230 link=1303955110/1#1 date=1303955762and neither (grinder or pump) go for long enough for it to be of any real significance EXCEPT.......if you happen to be listening to the news and are just about to get to the salient point in the report

Re: Shhhh I need quiet...
Thanks farmroast, Ill have a look at them as well.
I went and had a listen to the Evoluzione, its great, nice and quiet.
What I didnt say before and the main reason for the interest in the ones Im looking at is that I dont like all stainless and I also want something that we can program for the shot time, which means no levers at all, so the Evoluzione is out but at least I got to listen to a rotary in action.
I also got to listen to the K3 (she thinks it is) and its not as loud as any of the other grinders Ive heard but I think still too loud for 6 am.
I think Ive narrowed it down to three, so Im getting somewhere finally

Re: Shhhh I need quiet...
This smilies should be for morning vibe pumps. I went levers but its just me doing the pulling. A rotary is a reasonable option. I use a Dienes hand mill that produces a nice grind inline with my Mazzer Major. For a commercial grinder Ive found the Major to have a less offensive pitch and I like the grind profile with my Oly Cremina

Oh CJ, singled out, well not really but there is definitely a strong interest there, I guess because its different and I like aspects about it that are different to the others, no hot water arm, its tucked away, just as an example.

Re: Shhhh I need quiet...
Thanks Sam, yes you get it, its also part of the reason we dont have kids and wont be, there is a high pitch in there that neither of us can handle and I remember being in a maccas carpark and literally getting an instant migrane with the high pitch screams of a child.
Lacehim, ;D that is where I started, it is actually what I would really like, but due to my OHs growing interest I have to take that into account and he is not a hang around and wait for coffee to be made by a lever, he wants to press a button, steam his milk and thats it (well besides the initial grind into the basket part). One day I hope to still get the Lusso, I really do enjoy the complete manual process
Who me, yep youve got it in one already, its an RX3 and well be buying another RX7 for my OH. His old one is still sitting in his fathers shed which they hope to revamp again

Re: Shhhh I need quiet...
Hi Andy, second hand is definitely something we could consider, depending on the condition of it, were both a little funny about edible stuff being from spotless stuff, so well looked after is a must but yeah sure could need some working on in other areas.
As I said originally the quiet issue really is a huge must, I dont like talking in the morning, the radio doesnt even go on in my car on the way to work, my dog knows not to bark at me.
If this means spending more money, or even yes shock horror importing a machine then its what I have to do. The Presso still does a great job but I now need to worry about time in the morning as well as noise, so have to move on to a machine.

Yes, please not go there.Originally posted by 64656F7C62677D0E0 link=1303955110/16#16 date=1303986859I guess theres no need to go into the pros & cons of importing machines as its already been done.
Yep, considering you guys are happy to tinker you can grab a secondhand commercial machine for not a lot of money if you are willing to fiddle and clean it.Originally posted by 636F666B6B620E0 link=1303955110/9#9 date=13039686192nd hand you might consider a small plumb in commercial
Something like the Boema semi auto single group is a great value commercial machine and you can get a secondhand one for about the same price as a Silvia. Low risk, lots of fun and it should come with a built-in rotary pump.

I dont understand peoples immediate reaction to oh no you cant do that, this is a product that has no ETA into Australia, how the hell else am I going to get it.
The importer found they didnt sell, so dropped the range. I am sure that if you want one, it can be arranged. You may have to wait to consolidate into an order though. I hear that there is one which was used as a display machine, but have no further info about it. At the very least, it would require a full service if they are happy to sell it.

and yes I do know that a No.5 is a meat grinder!!!
If they have to read responses like yours above?
I think we can all do a tad better than that... If you want help, its not a good way to approach things.
I am surprised youd contemplate a commercial machine and then attempt to use it with a hand grinder? Sorta diesel in the Ferrari if you ask me... :-?

Just out of interest, what is the car? I used to have a late 80s RX7 and my first car was nearly going to be a late 70s RX3.Originally posted by 130801100513080906140512600 link=1303955110/10#10 date=1303969478The car is loud though, lots of sound deadening for that

Re: Shhhh I need quiet...
Hi shapeshifter,
I have another idea for you. The PV lusso from Sorrentina Coffee. Its a 2 group lever, no pump. Combined with a decent handgrinder it would be near silent. The noisest part of my machine is purging the steam wand. I love it... quiet coffee.
Using the double basket (its small) I can get a decent shot just under 30mls. Its steams great, and heats up pretty quick. $1500 wtih a tamper... and smaller than most HX machines.

Re: Shhhh I need quiet...
Ill stand up for a fellow novacastrian! working as an acoustic engineer, you find people always underestimate the effect of noise on whatever theyre doing.
for anyone remotely interested, noise annoyance comes from the rate of change before and after the sound occuring, not how long it goes for. ill vouch for the annoyance factor of quiet 6am quiet 6am VIBRATE BRRRR to quiet 6am quiet 6am. If someone gradually turns the tv up over 5 minutes, you probably wont give a damn, but if they turn it on suddenly you will pay a lot more notice
Was chatting to a cafe owner in Waverley Sydney the other week who said that his repeat customers had doubled at least after putting acoustic insulation on his ceiling so the outside road noise was reduced while people were chatting and enjoying their coff. He said people had no idea why, but they had a much nicer cafe experience after he put the insulation in, and came back for more a lot more often.
Also should note that annoyance factor is proportional to the pitch of the noise and is especially nasty for mid to high frequencies (~1000 to ~10k Hz). I cant say for sure but id guess that a vibrating pump would slot nicely in there.
WAY WAY too over complicated for this topic I know - but thought it might interest some people.
Sam

Re: Shhhh I need quiet...
Fair enough mate, as long as you go in with your eyes wide open. Not sure why its not currently being imported but I"m sure Chris will be able to inform us.Originally posted by 5B4049584D5B40414E5C4D5A280 link=1303955110/12#12 date=1303978568Hahahaha if you take notice youll see I actually participated in that thread.

We have just imported an ECU for our car and that is because no one sells them here yet. There is nothing wrong with doing this when you have the skills to be able use it to the best of its ability and deal with any problems if they arise. Majority of people dont have the skills and yes therefore shouldnt go out on a limb and import.
Anyway, ultimately its our choice on what we do.
I completely understand where Dennis is coming from too; there are a number of excellent machines available in Australia with full support but youve singled out the LaSpaz with the only explanation being the low noise level (Im sure theres more than that to it).
I guess theres no need to go into the pros & cons of importing machines as its already been done.

Ive upset you though didnt mean to do so. Im sorry.
Surely though you can see where Im coming from? Id be happy for you to point out what Ive said that is in any way incorrect (apart from the quip about the no. 5)
PS. People join in droves, not leave.
