    Just an additional point to add to this - I used one of the nozzle attachments that came with my heat gun, which helped to focus the heat/air onto the portafilter head. I did this for two portafilter handles, unfortunately I slightly melted the handle on the first one. So be careful, as I'm sure you will want to keep the original handles in good shape for possible resale down the track.

      Did you use a vice to hold it down or just gripped it with you hands (and towel) and twisted it off?

        I just used my hands (gloved) and a towel to unscrew the head. If you've melted the loctite, it'll undo very easily.
