  • My New Baby (+Grinder)

After much consideration, this weekend I bought myself an Elektra Micro Casa and a Lelit Grinder! This machine really caught my eye the second I saw it. I really liked the style and having something different (a lever machine) appealed to me. It's more work, but I consider it fun (I say this now, give me a few months!).

Pulled a few shots through it, and still getting used to it. Coffee hasnt been the greatest so far, but the more shots I do, the better they are becoming.

The grinder grinds well, but I wish it had some sort of dial/numbering on it so I could tell where I am at. Ill probably have to end up writing them on myself in case I ever accidentally wind it off the sweet spot (when I find it!)

Ooo... Nice. Big jump from a nespresso machine

Love to play with one myself, but knowing myself, I probably find that it's too time consuming for day to day use. And relegate it to weekend play toy only.

For marking my previous macap MXA grinder, I used a little bit of those white out roller and just mark off the "true zero" of the grinder and use that as a reference point. Easy to rub off and reapply if position moved after a service/clean.

Now my Mazzer has the chrome finish, I just use a little blackboard market and mark off the true zero in black and red dot to mark where my average espresso area is.

Nice looking machine. Kinda thing you buy for the pleasure and design excellence. Good on the bench as a talking point too.

Where does the water go and how big is the reserve?

Yeah Okitoki, BIG jump and a big learning curve but im determined! I might have to do the whiteout thing too.

Journeyman the water goes in the top, the whole thing is basically a boiler. Take the top off, unscrew the cap and pour it in, screw the cap back on and put the lid (where the eagle is) back on.

Max shots you can probably pull would be 3 before it gets too hot and burns the coffee. Its not a machine you want to use if you are needing to do like 3 or 4 shots at a time.

In regards to speed, it doesnt seem to be any slower than any other machine. Heats up at about the same (havent timed it 100% yet, i will though).

$1900 from Jetblack + $279 for the grinder. Bought some other stuff while I was there (just couldnt help myself!).

ggoosen, yeah I am, its my new toy! I need to get some practice in on it though so I can get it dialed in and pour a decent cup. I got a friend who JUST got a 1955 lever imported from Italy and he gave me some tips so I am going to try it out.

He he, looks like the machine that featured in one of the later series of the Sopranos....Tony bought it for his wife and opined that he needed a pilot's license to make a coffee.....though maybe it wasn't the lever version.

                          Lovely machine, Juvv

I too visited Jetblack and pondered over the micro casa lever ... it's a machine that has to be seen in the metal to really appreciate the design and form.

I would be interested to hear how your shots improve over time as you get better with the lever process, as the home-barista reviews of this machine are quite good and mention not only the design but also it's ability to extract subtle flavours.

                            Thanks BB,

Yea it is a nice machine. Its got some weird dent on the front of it which im trying to decide whether or not its worth taking back to get them to look at. its like a 1cm "slice" into the metal.

Turned the grinder finer today, and did a hard tamper. im having trouble getting crema happening on this, is just dissipates fast, doesnt stay nice and thick. Could be the beans. Using jetblacks Ethiopian beans. Probably my skill more than the beans

have you taken any classes yet? its hard enough for some people using a semi-auto machine already, but adding the complexity of a manual lever is just going to make your process alot harder...

Also try to keep things as consistent as possible during your learning process, the fewer variables you have, the less things you can mess up
