  • Nouva Simonelli Musica dripping from steam wand

    Happy New Year!!

I have had my Musica for 3 years now and it has been great. I noticed this week that there is water dripping from the tip of the steam wand. The drip tray is half full after a day.

Had anybody experienced this? What is the likely problem?

    Happy new year,

The first question is have you had your machine serviced?

With the Musica the steam is activated by the lever mechanism that has two rubber o ring seals on the piston.

Like all rubber components they will eventually fail with use and heat.

A regular service and inspection will replace these seals as required.

    Cheers

    Antony

I've got a question re: the Musica...the manual which came with our machine doesn't mention anything about chemical cleaning or backwashing, though it did come with a blind portafilter. Also no mention in the manual about descaling the machine. Could anyone illuminate me as to whether chemical cleaning and backwashing is appropriate for the Musica?(and descaling for that matter) I picked up a sample of a chemical cleaner at MICE but will pass it on to someone else if it's not necessary for this machine. Thanks!

        Hi VulcanoCoffee,

Congratulations on the purchase, the Musica is a great machine.

I do have to ask though, who sold you the machine? Any supplier worth their salt should have given you a run down including the cleaning regime.

Yes your machine requires back flushing using the blind filter and also using a cleaning powder like Cafetto or similar. So don't throw away the blind filter.

Most cleaning products have a cleaning schedule with them. It will basically be a process of on/off/wait/on/off etc cycle for about five times then a rinse then cleaning cycle again.

You should also backflush using just the blind filter without chemical cleaner.

In summary do a basic back flush twice a week.
Do back flushing with a chemical cleaner every 3or so kg of coffee you run through your machine ( I am assuming you are using it in a domestic environment)

        Hope this helps

        Regards

After you do the chemical clean, I recommend removing the shower screen to clean it. Also clean the brew head with a soft cloth and some cleaner in solution, whilst the shower screen is removed. I was a Musica owner for about 7 years they are a great machine. I did a chemical clean every month which maybe a little to often but it is easy once you get used to it. I also did a water back flush every second day. There is sure to be a video on it somewhere on the net.

            Hi Guys,

Thanks very much for your replies, I really appreciate it.
I bought the machine from * ****, who I believe frequents these forums. I think at the time we bought it he/she recommended I visit this forum for advice.
Also, in K beans defense, shouldn't the manual of the espresso machine contain details on required backwashing? I'm looking at the manual now and my wife and I can find no reference to back washing or chemical cleaner.
Stan, did you do a descale on your Musica at all? Does anyone know if that's something we can do ourselves? My wife found an online reference to citric acid being used in the water tank but we're not sure if that involves any risk of damage to the machine.
I love this machine, it makes a cafe quality coffee and suits our contemporary kitchen.

              Hi VulcanoCoffee,

You are not missing anything, the manual doesn't refer to a cleaning program. I agree it should but it is a common issue with many of the manuals that come out of Italy. The Nuova Simonelli manual is actually at the better end of manuals that come out of Italy. You should see some of the Italian to English translations that we see.

Be careful you are not confusing the decaling requirements of an HX machine and a pod/single boiler machine.

Back flushing and chemical back flush is your most important and regular maintenance requirement.

Descaling comes next and the frequency depends on a few things.
How long have you had your machine?
Where are you situated? Water quality varies from city to city and also region.
Have you used a filter or filtered water?
Have you noticed a performance change in your machine?

              Cheers

I used filtered water (Brits jug at the time). I had it serviced a year ago and the technician stated that a descale was not necessary. I did not have it descaled in the 8 years I was using it daily. However I have been in soft water areas the whole time. It will depend on the water quality in the area you are in, I still use a filter (Aquapro) more for peace of mind. The is a lot of info on the forum regarding water filtration.

                  Hi Antony & Stan,

Thanks again for your detailed info.
Antony; you may be right, possible we are confusing the descaling requirements of the machine, I'll look in to that further.
We use UV filtered water from our water tank(rain water 95% of the time). I assume that's a fairly 'soft' water. We've had the machine for about 14 months now. The only change we've noticed with the machine lately is that it's performing a bit louder than normal when doing an extraction.

                  Happy Easter guys.

                  Cheers,
                  Chris
