I solved the problem, and in the process I am now an expert at both the E61 machine and of the fluid control of the single boiler heat exchanger espresso machine.
There is a tiny, tiny plastic jet in the top of the E61 group under the large nut.
This jet is protected by a small filter and allows for an initial flow of water into the head which acts against a spring, allowing for a slow pre-infusion as the pressure builds, and once this has reached a certain point it opens the main group to pump pressure and extraction follows.
This jet had a spec of scale that was removed by a pin and it is now working brilliantly.
Unbelievable.

Sounds like a blockage between opv and the group. Have a look at the plumbing diagram. Trace the pathway to the boiler to the group. I only know e61. Does the water flow out of the group outlet on the opv.
There could be scale blocking the flow.Last edited by dumiya; 5 May 2017, 08:35 PM.

So after much reading and a long think I have replaced a few parts. I am now pulling my hair out trying to figure out the problem.
I have replaced both the cold water fill valve and the pump.
The automatic boiler filler works and pumps good volumes. The buttons on the front activate the group (3 way) valve and switch the pump on. The group valve moves freely when dismantled.
I have no water flow through the group, even removing the valve from the group I get no water flow.
Water flows through the OPV and back to the tank.
HELP!

I didn't test against resistance, but when I click a brew button on the front the group solenoid opens but there is no flow through the group or the OPV back to the tank.
It is an Ulka EX5, dated 2009.
If this has automatic fill then it couldn't be anything except the pump. I hope...

Seabass, so the pump won't push water against any sort of resistance when bench testing it, with other pipes etc disconnected? If so, something is wrong. What style of pump is it?

Matt

So an update.
I failed to recognise this machine is a heat exchange unit with automatic boiler fill. The cold fill solenoid that I replaced almost certainly wasn't clicking open as the level was fine.
If the pump can't push water to the group with the group valve open then I would say the pump is shagged. Importantly the OPV isn't blocked though vents no water with the pump running.
Is it reasonable to replace the pump? It sputters on a bench test and moves water against no resistance but maybe even gravity defeats is.

Need help with Expobar diagnosis
Hi folks.
I was recently given an Expobar Office Control in unknown condition. It is a 2004 model with the touchpad buttons.
I am having trouble establishing the problem.
So, the pump turns on but nothing happens. There is no flow through the group- zip, zilch nada. I tried to force water to the pump and got nowhere, and removing the pump from the outlet it moves water so unlikely the pump. This leads me to consider the cold water fill valve. I disconnected the pump and the 3 way valve at the group and listened for the valve clicking over and heard nothing. I have since removed the valve and found that the valve moves freely but thought the continuity of the coil (Parker) a little high at about 1500ohms. I replaced it with a whole new valve and coil assembly today.
The problem persists so I am pretty sure that the coil is not energising. I don't have a multimeter for mains/high energy.
Am I missing anything before I start tearing out and looking for a new electronic brain? Is there a specific relay that energises the coil?
Thanks,Last edited by seabass; 1 May 2017, 08:20 PM.
