  • Steam wand is spitting

Hi collective brains of the forum.
    I’m stumped.
My machine is at full boiler pressure (about 1.2 bar) but the steam comes out unevenly.
It sort of spits varying from medium to full pressure every second or so.
I cleaned the steam holes but it’s still the same.
    Any ideas???
    Cheers [emoji482]

What espresso machine do you have? (important).
    Is the steam wet?

Perhaps the boiler water level is too high? More info on the machine will help with answers.

      Cheers

Good morning and good news. I removed the steam wand and tip and gave it all a super clean and now it’s back to normal.
I’m not sure what caused it but my guess is grit from the water.
Machine is a Profitec Pro 500 with a 4 hole tip.
Good to have if fixed up ready for an Easter workout !

Grit from the water eh! can you tell us what led to this conclusion?

I would have thought an accumulation of dried milk a more likely cause.

My semi-educated guess would be small pieces of scale.

I suspect your right Matt, particularly if the machine is producing wet steam.

What quality of water filtering do you use Chippy?

Hi Dimal, glad you asked, just ordered a replacement Brita c 150. Have no idea what Grillsy uses. Sorry, couldn't help myself. Chippy

Another possibility is the internal teflon tube in the steam wand was too long. Profitec and ECM have a bad habit of supplying the teflon tube too long and it partially blocks the steam holes, or it can slip down over time and block the holes . I usually cut off a couple of mm, just to be sure. Cut it at an angle too. If dis-assembling and re-assembling fixed the issue, you may have just pushed the tube back into place .

                        Hi Mal and others.
All good tips. I’m using unfiltered Melbourne water.
The cause is still unknown to me but after the clean the pressure is back to full and steam is continuous again. Milk, scale or grit .....? Not sure
The good thing about this one is I now know how to remove the steam wand. Nice and easy.
                        Thanks to the brains trust.
