Very true words Erimus. One reason I'm glad I don't crave a high end dual boiler.

Whatever you want to buy will always be that bit more expensive than you want to pay. Sometimes you just have to make an exception, whether this be by patience and saving for a bit longer. Just get the coffee machine you really desire, then you won't have any regrets when you look back.

Yeah, I was going to find out if they had the Rocket on display.Originally posted by Birkin7 View PostMaybe checkout Crema Coffe Garage in Stafford(Brisbane)for the Barista and Mechanika Slim and also talk to them about your issues with the VBM Junior which they also sell. I found the Junior to be a very well finished and built machine, very well set out internally with a lot of quality parts used when I was looking for a HX machine recently.

I've been able to provide some answer to my own question about the differences between the $2k and $2.5k machines. I popped into Coffee Machine Specialists / Barazi here in Brisbane to look at a few. Seeing them side by side you really notice the difference in fit and finish. Machines like the Isomac Tea and Expobar Leva look a little rough aroudn the edges (literally) compared to the likes of the Bezerra Mitica, Profitect Pro 500 etc. Its fair to assume this external quality difference is also an indicator of whats inside too.
I did have the Expobar Leva high in the list but after chatting with them its sounds like its repairs are quite challenging, mainly due to the internal layout. This would bump up the long term cost of ownership and eat into any up front saving. I've also dropped the Domobar Junior based on feedback in the other threads.
Interestingly they had a Cime co-11 on display. Came across as a very well built machine at the price. A shame they didn't have the co-01 there as this is one I'm considering. Its qulaity reflects that of the little cousin then it should be a very noce machine.
My list is narrowing down to the following
Cime co-01*
Bezzera Mitica/Magica
Bezzera Domus Galatea
Rocket Apartamento*
ECM Barista*
* yet to be viewed in the flesh
While I would love to add the Profitec Pro 500 to that list. Unfortunately the lowest price I've seen is around $2800 which is too much of a budget stretch.

Congrats on a nice ex demo pickup. I picked up my profitec pro 500 new but I’m happy with that. I know if I ever decide to sell it there will be a cue for it and I won’t lose much. No plans to sell though so do my wait around for mine.Originally posted by crazyhakins View PostI picked up a 2nd hand Pro 500
An ex demo or used quality machine is a good idea though so hunt like a Bear for one.

I picked up a 2nd hand Pro 500 from JetBlack and couldn't be happier. It's a wonderful machine and despite originally looking at cheaper machines I'm so glad I didn't. For me it's long term investment, and I want to be looking at the machine I wanted everyday, not some stand-in that gives me upgraditis. I also upgraded from a Sunbeam, I've worked on commercial machines in the past so knew what a good machine should feel like The 500 ticks all the boxes. You could hang on for a 2nd hand one to appear, r contact them and see what they have.Originally posted by arcachon View PostBuying a new machine would be more long term investment for me so re-sale value not the highest priority. No doubt its easier to move a 2nd hand Bezzera, Rocket, ECM etc. Also make its harder to by a good 2nd hand one.

Some brands hold their value better than others. Trends can play a part too. Think about how long you plan to keep this purchase and whether resale value is important to you. Scanning the used machine market can give you a feel for what does and doesn't hold its value and if you can be bothered following them, how quickly they sell.Originally posted by arcachon View PostExpobar Office Leva looks a great value machine. Another that caught my eye was the Cime co-01. Seems a decent kit for the coin.

Thanks CL. Been doing a bit more research. Seems a lot of small upgrades across a number of areas dictates the difference between the $2k machines and the 2.5k. Some cosmetic, others more functional. I like the YouTube videos from Whole Latte Love. They get into a lot of detail.

Generally its a case of you get what you pay for. The extra dollars at this price range normally buys you better design/componets, possibly more up to date design and maybe extra features. The quality of finish usually goes up with the price also.Originally posted by arcachon View PostMy question is what’s the main difference between these two price levels? i.e. what’s the main benefit of spending the extra $400 odd?
The Domobar Jr is an older design and seems to have fallen out of favor due to long term durability issues and labor intensive repair costs due to layout of internals. Do your research but most of the machines mentioned are of high quality and will give good service. Check for EOFY deals.Last edited by CafeLotta; 27 June 2018, 12:25 PM.
