Hey roosterben - got the Cafelat silicone seals (8mm & 8.5mm) from Coffee Parts as well as a whole bunch of other spare parts that will hopefully get my Giotto brewing again

    Hi Gavisconi007
opened up the innards today in the pursuit of your suggestion - removed and cleaned the water level probe, 135c thermostat, pressure safety valve and vacuum breaker valve. the water level probe was in the best condition of all these parts and was given a thorough going over with a course scouring pad, then placed back in the boiler. The 135c Thermostat looked pretty suss so I am replacing that, along with the vacuum breaker valve, which was also in pretty poor condition. I am also replacing all the copper gaskets on these fittings as the pressure safety valve didn't even have one and others look "not quite right". Waiting patiently now for payday so I can get Coffee Parts in on this caper

Hi Caffeinator! opened it up and had a look at the internals - first time in a long time - seems that the last time it went to hospital (a few years ago now) some parts were upgraded - pressure sensor is not the same one as original and control board looks "newer" than the rest of the internals. As that fix was a gift from the sister-in-law I never got to see exactly what went on, but am optimistic that control board and at least a partial rewire has occurred. On the down side, I have cleaned some parts and scrapped others - Coffee Parts are getting an order for some obscure parts come payday!

For the shower screen take it out and remove the rubber seal, I find a thin flat screwdriver wrapped in a cloth does the trick (to avoid scratching the brass group internals), insert screwdriver in slots where the wings for the group handle slot in. Once removed soak the shower screen in water and Cafetto coffee cleaning powder (even washing up liquid will work but much slower) for a hew hours. A washing up brush or toothbrush is good for cleaning any stubborn coffee grains or oils.

New groups seals are pretty cheap ($8-$15) but prob worth the extra few dollars for a Cafelat silicone one. Have a look on a sponsor site for a Rocket Giotto/E61 sized group seal. You probably want a 8mm thick one and may as well get a spacer as well in case you need it (or alternatively get both 8mm and 8.5mm).

    yep!
Off to Bunnings right now will look for a suitable set of tools for the job
As you suggest I will start with the auto fill probe & see if it really is as easy as that - thanks for your input

replacing the control board sounds feasible if I can find a supplier - rewiring sounds a bit more complex however. I will search for a wiring harness kit - hopefully with detailed installation instructions!!
Thank you so much for your input. I will start with the company that originally sold me the machine

Could it be as simple as a calcified Auto-Fill water level probe? I would start with that. Remove the probe, gently sand it to remove any calcium build up, and re-try.

To remove the shower screen seal, use a small hook like a dentists pick. You can get a cheap set of various picks and pokers from the tool section of Bunnings.

Seems like Caffeinator (above) has made a recommendation from the perspective of a specialist professional...
    Worth chasing up.

Would recommend contacting our Site Sponsors to see who may be able to supply you with the necessary "Kit". If you don't have electrical qualifications though, I'd advise arranging with a licensed sparky to install the wiring update and new controller.

Hi Mal thanks for the welcome!
We live in Mackay (QLD) There are a few machine techs here but if I can get a handle on what the problem(s) are I would like to take a crack at fixing it myself if possible

Easy fix. Replace control board and rewire to post 2010 spec.

started a topic ECM Giotto problems

    ECM Giotto problems

hi! Joined Coffee Snobs today to troubleshoot some issues with our Giotto machine. It is the "Giotto Premium" which was purchased new in 2003 and has given us endless enjoyment as well as a few problems over the years. We have had several different service organisations work on this machine over time which has solved some issues, but created others.

After it came back the last time everything went well for a time, but then it had startup issues. When switching it on the usual click then the pump would start for a few seconds and the boiler would start heating up. Then we noticed that it took a few "clicks" before the pump engaged and the heating started. Now, it can take an hour or more of constant clicking before it fires. Sometimes it could click all day without firing.

Simple fix, I decided to just leave it on once it fired up & came to pressure, as it switched the boiler on & off as normal to keep the pressure stable at 1.1 bar. PROBLEM: My wife keeps turning it off - she's a compulsive switch flicker & cant see the point in having it on all night.

Recently, after clicking for a while, the pump kicked in but didn't stop after a few seconds - just kept going and water started flowing out all over the bench. I think that's just a hose or connection, or even a pipe failure, but I haven't investigated the cause yet.

We also get a large amount of leaking from the brewing head as the coffee is pouring, probably needs the seal replacing or the basket holder has worn to a point where it doesn't fit properly on the seal any more. I have searched for instructions to remove the screen & seal, but have not found any instructions or advice on how I go about doing this, and I am a bit wary of just attacking it with a screwdriver in case I do more harm than good.

Any advice on these issues is gratefully appreciated!
Working...
