and in another useless update, a part I ordered from the UK arrived, and the element I needed from Victoria STILL hasn't arrived.....
Both ordered same day 5mins of each other...

Soak the hx with citric while you are there too. And it may have restrictors in the top hx pipe, that may need clearing out.
Here is a pic of last one I did...
It looks like your machine is a thermosyphon heated group. So, if you don't have a restrictor in that top pipe, you should get one for it.
What it does is restricts the flow of boiling hot water from the top of the hx, and blends it with cooler water that is in the return loop to the bottom of the hx. A little difficult to tune, but results in a machine that needs much less of a flush.
That blocked restrictor meant that the group would not heat properly (no thermosyphon), and no matter how hot the boiler, the coffee was no where near hot enough, almost lukewarm.
Turns out it is a very nice Diadema for me!
