Thanks folks. Think I'll put the money into proper maintenance.

Filtration, good water, regular backwashing and a quality, professional service every couple of years by a tech who really knows what s/he is doing (and god knows there are some seriously dodgy ones out there).

Good gear is designed to last and if you look after it, you have the provisions of Australian consumer law on your side should something catastrophic occur.

In general, I'd say no- as an extended warranty won't cover consumables such as showers, seals, anti-vac valves, safety valves et al. It would cover the pump, boiler, plumb runs (subject to water quality issues which may be debated).

In summary, you'd be paying to extend the warranty on chassis and boiler/s for fabrication and/or QC issues, the pump?, control board and possibly PID/SSR. All should last much longer than a paper or extended warranty- or consumer law kicks in again.

The only issue might be getting it honoured, but you might have a similar discussion anyway on "warranty" issues.

Ah yes. I have already factored this in! And I totally agree - use the equipment within it's limits, do the right maintenance at the right time. Much of the battle is won right there.

Excellent advice. I use commercial cartridge filters on both of my machines. The one inside is fed by an under sink filter sourced from the local water filter shop who told me that is the filter he sells to commercial coffee shops. It is connected to a filtered water tap in the sink that feeds the Diadema. The outside one is hard plumbed into a Bombora filter cartridge I purchased direct from Bombora.

The suppliers seem to want you to replace them annually I suspect for hygiene reasons but the specs indicate the cartridges are good for so many litres of water. My instinct is that in a domestic situation you should get quite a few years out of a cartridge. I also think the hardness of the local water should be a big factor. What to the experts say?

Not matter what area of OZ you live I wouldn't disregard using the Insurance money For Good long term Espresso Machine assurance!
And That assurance I speak of is water filtration.

A good quality prosumer machine competently operated, well looked after and maintained will easily outlive any consumer insurance policy.

Ted2013, that is my default position. For this reason, I have never bothered with extended warranty for run of the mill consumer goods. I'm reasonably handy with mechanical and electronic reapirs. I'm leaning towards not taking out a warranty extension, and just forking out for parts if and when.

But you've reminded me that I should really have a look at Jetblack's T&Cs

Not sure about the details of the extended warranty being offered but these are generally not good value. Often they are more restrictive on what they cover than the original warranty. Also can be a hassle to make a claim if something does go wrong as they are usually through a third party.

    Extended warranty

I have a Lelit Elizabeth on order from Jetblack. It's still a couple of weeks out from delivery.

I've always been ambivalent about extended warranty offers, having observed that if a product is going to fail, it often does so immediately or early on. (A generalisation, obviously.) However, I'm wondering if it might be prudent to sign up for, say, an extra year or two of warranty. The cost isn't trivial, but not too bad, and I dare say it is reasonably proportionate to the cost of the equipment.

Just interested in hearing some other opinions. Money well spent, or money which could be spent on other (read - More Fun) things?
