I am happy with it but definitely considering selling and buying a new one since the grinder is superfluous at this point. Is the Breville BES920 the best option? The Lelit Mara X? Besides the improvement in workflow granted by the double boiler, would I even notice a difference in the cup?

    Thanks heaps for your advice!

Did you get any improvement moving from small conical burrs to big conical burrs? If you're after more flavour you should demo a flat burr grinder like the Ceado E5SD single doser (flat 64mm burrs).

The boiler/group head/PID in the Kate is the same as what's on the Elizabeth and Victoria. All three are incredibly temperature stable and are capable of making excellent espresso. If you don't need a dual boiler, you could go with the Victoria. If you also want workflow improvement then look at the dual boiler Elizabeth.

Agree aesthetics/taste can be subjective, and you never know how much of the wee bit of difference are influenced by other variables like beans, dose, grind, distribution, temp setting or even placebo effect.

I've just purchased a Lelit Mara X that should arrive this week. I'm coming from a Lelit PL41TEMD and not expecting a huge difference so mainly purchased for improved workflow on milk based drinks and a bit of bling factor. I do gain the natural pre-infusion from the E61 head so maybe a bit of difference there ?

Like sacsnob wrote, if it's milk coffees the difference will not be great but I suspect you would notice it a wee bit.

I went from a BDB (BSE920) to an ECM Synchonika and a Decent DE1Xl and a Flair ... and I certainly notice a difference with each machine, but I'm drinking espresso (including ristretto and lungo) almost exclusively. If you are an espresso drinker I'd be very surprised if you did not notice the difference but given your comments about the dual boiler is sounds like milk is at least a part of the workflow mix.

However, for me it's not just about what's in the cup. I gain great satisfaction from a machine I love the look of too. I also love the way different machines sound and feel and the different workflows required by each. It's the *entire* sensory experience of making the coffee that is important to me, not just the flavor from the cup.

What value you put on things like aesthetics and sound/feel is up to you and of course your budget, but for my money I'll pay more for a machine or a grinder that does as good a job as another if, in my mind, it is a thing of beauty.

I doubt you'd get any discernible improvement in the cup esp. if you drink milk based coffees like most people, though you might get better steaming power, better form factor, more bling, improvement in workflow as you mentioned.
