  • Newbie advice Faema Carisma S1 low pressure problem

    Hi All,

Just wanted to get some advice on having a low pressure when pulling a shot. I've picked up a Faema Carisma S1 a little while ago and struggle to get it to extract at a high enough pressure.
The pressure shoots right up (16+ bart) when using a blind basket so I think the pump is ok.
However I struggle to get it above 4-5bar when using grinds no matter what. (15g in a 14gram basket)

I'm using a cheap Sunbeam grinder (not sure if that's contributing) which I've tried various grind coarseness on the finer end of the adjustment.
I use one of these distributor gadgets to cos I'm not confident in my abilities to get the coffee evenly spread and level

    Any suggestions appreciated

    Cheers,
    Michael

I purchased a sunbeam grinder a few years ago and could not get it fine enough for espresso. I rang sunbeam and they sent me some shims (washers are too thick). Take out the top burr by undoing the retaining nut, then insert the shims and reinstall the burr. This raises the burr slightly closer to the other burr and re-calibrates the analogue fine-coarse dial. Use enough shims until the grind becomes fine enough for your needs.

On the issue of the Sunbeam, Shibello in Rhodes (Sydney) is selling second hand (warrantied) Mini Mazzers for around $400, food for thought ?

Or have a look at the for sale section here. There's a Mazzer Major in there at the moment for $400.

Thanks for the heads up. I think that Mazzer Major might be a bit overkill for my small kitchen hmm. I'll keep an eye out. The Mazzer mini might be a good option for me

About the Mini Mazzers. The Mini's have been used in most cafe's for De-Caf, generally much less use and wear and tear that the primary grinder in the cafe.

Secondly, Schibello service the grinder, install new burrs and make sure it works and therefore give a warranty.

I replaced my old Bezzera with a Mini from Schibello, then purchased a second mini for my daughter to replace her Bezzera grinder.
