Over the past 6 months the ulka vib pump on my VBM would stop infrequently. Normally happened when I was doing my monthly Grouphead chemical clean and rinse, I thought ok pump is 4 years old and poured a lot of coffees, getting a little hot and tripping the thermal protection switch. I will just replace it even though it never had problems getting up to good brewing pressure. Replaced the pump and also installed a Quickmill Pulsar damper.
Fired the machine up, all worked well for a couple of days then problem returned. Dam!!!
Pulled the pump thermal protection switch out and replaced with a bridging wire, machine ran fine for 2 weeks. Ordered and fitted a new thermal protection switch. All is good.
Moral of the story, the solution is not always as obvious as you think.
Also neither item was expensive to replace but there was a huge variation on ulka pump prices, up to 50% difference between suppliers and up to 100% difference on the thermal switch. I also replaced the steam and water tap washers and there was a 300+% difference between some suppliers. All suppliers were in Australia.
Like anything it pays to shop around.
