  • What to upgrade to?

So have been thinking recently about what my next machine will be. I currently have an ecm mechanika slim for the past 2 years and has generally been great. I came from a flair and bellman and this was a massive step up from workflow perspective.

Currently, I split a shot in the morning and lunchtime with my wife with all drinks milk based.

However, there have been some issues.
    1) I’m not massive fan of heat up time and it is connected to a smart plug.
    2) linked to 1 but feels like such a waste to have machine on for minimum 30 mins for 1 coffee.
    3) lack of temp control. I recently got it serviced and asked them to turn down pressure so it sits just below 1 bar and temp is around 92-93 on group head thermometer but I find if it’s on for too long, need a cooling flush. This leads me to a dual boiler.

I love the look of e61 group head but wanting to move more to a saturated group head. This may seem like a crazy move, but have been thinking about getting the breville dual boiler. I know it’s not at the same level quality wise as the ecm, but it is so feature rich and I have friends who have had theirs for 5+ years. The other option was the Rancilio Silvia Pro but given the breville is third of the cost, it’s hard to go past. I can’t afford a $5k machine.

any thoughts on what would be another machine worth looking at? Also would love a shot timer and dual boiler.

    thanks in advance!

    Not crazy at all.

You are right on all counts I reckon.

Not the same quality as an ECM (not many are) but dang, you can not beat a BDB for bang for bucks. There are a legion of fans on this forum and although I don't personally have one (I had one for five years or so), I just organized the purchase of two used ones from this forum for each of my two sons. So I'm a believer for sure.

(I don't know anything about the ECM Mechanika Slim but I assume from what you are saying that it's not particularly feature rich.)

Good time to be looking for a BDB. Seems major retailers have them back in stock, and can be had from $900-1k depending where you look (check OzB).

I'm almost a year in to my BDB and still pretty happy with it. Very consistent, and very hard to beat featurewise at that price.

Yea mechanika slim is not feature rich at all. Ok great to have sanity check see my thought process isn’t too crazy!

I have seen a couple deals on ozbargain for about $900. Should have bought one when I was looking at mechanika slim and they were $600 on sale! It’s been an interesting journey and I have learnt a lot about coffee since.
