So, to put this one to bed -- my new spout cleaner is a kids bendy straw (the kind that comes in a pack of 100) with the part above the bendy bit cut down to about 1cm long. Its flexible, adjustable, reliable, effective, and best of all: cheap

TG, I just tried the bent-brush trick -- I think I have to get a better "cheap" brush, the cheese-metal just tore!

There is some interesting photos around here of what grinders can do to pointy objects

BTW Both of mine have been doserless too. What I found that just cleaning the spout area did part of the job but the build up of fines around the doser vanes reduced the ability of them to throw the good ones.

Thats why my finger guard was removed.

I had a near miss with a spoon and my new to me second-hand Mazzer Super Jolly :-[

So...is the "output chute" of the grinder (between the burrs and the doser) supposed to be clogged full of grinds that need to be manually removed after each grinding session?

Maybe thats why the finger guard is missing from the machine...

... and, apparently, the remains of part-ground spoons.

Eek! Well, I wasnt going to be pushing a spoon into it while it was running!

Still, I think I can find a couple of old paintbrushes in the kids art cupboard that have only been used for watercolours -- once theyre clean enough, of course!

    Not a spoon.
Thats how I broke my EM0450.

Get a small paintbrush and bend the metal bit (between the bristles and handle) if need be to get some angle into the chute.

Thanks everyone, some good ideas there. Ill take the hopper in to Big W and see if I can find a Click-Clack lid that fits; also invest in a cheapy fork or teaspoon that I can bend to suit

@beanflying: this is a doserless model, but thanks for the advice on cleaning!

    Hi,

I had an IC until 6 weeks ago and picked up an Ascaso here 4 weeks ago for the shop. Both have the same issues if you leave the spout cloged like that it collects more and more fines behind it until the spout cloggs totally. Even when clean a little grind stays in the machine.

Best remedy as the sweeper vanes also dont sweep totally either is to kick it toward you run it and tap the side of the grinder every now and then. This seems to get rid of any unswept grinds and the gravity on the spout area and a tap seems to get rid of most of it.

Apart from that I have taken to dropping the top for a ful clean every kg or so of beans. If you are going to do this just mark the upper burr carrier (plastic thing with teeth on it) and count how many turns it takes to remove this will save you needing to dial in again.

Apart from that they both grind pretty well

I use a small paint brush and also force air through the hopper by raising and lowering the hopper lid quickly a few times.

This is a similar action to those that are lucky enough that a "Click-Clack" lid fits their hopper.

The air forced through by this action helps clear the chute and the brush takes care of the little remaining.

I havent had any left over grinds for many months now since doing this.

Take your hopper to somewher like Big W and see if the "Click-Clack" lids will fit it.

The lids are available to purchase seperately.

    gday
i think youll find this happening with almost any grinder - doser or doserless.
i use a fondue fork that ive bent and covered the sharp end wit htape to sccrape out leftover grinds. a bit annoying but im used to it, and at home theres no hge hurry. you can also leave the grinds there ,and then the next day (or whenever) grind for a few secs to clear out the old stuff and then grind away...
